My god what a hugely long article for a simple principal.

the way the difference was explained to me years back, and it is the simplest way I have heard of, is think of your manual gear box in a car.

the engine has the same horse power whether it is in 1st gear of 5th.

Can your car pull away in 5th. NO!!!. Why not?

The 5th gear does not produce enough torque. By gearing down to 1st the engine revs at the same speed, has the same horsepower, but yet it has enough torque for your car to move.

Simple.

Torque is great for getting your car to start to move. This is why you will hear people saying torque equates to acceleration. This is wrong. You want lots of torque as your car accelerates from zero but there comes a point where lots of torque is counter productive.

Compare two cars the same engine, one with a 4 speed gearbox and one with a 5 speed gear box. Which one do you think will be faster? Obviously at the maximum speed the 5 speed, as maximum torque is no longer the priority.
