Jim Conforti said my 318ti w/his chip should hit 140...it saw 130 and probably would have gone a bit more...downhill maybe 135+

Vmax for a stock E36 318is coupe or sedan unfettered with a speed limiter is 213 km/h (132 mph) – on level ground, that is, as the car slooooowly reaches the rev limiter.

I know they vary from year to year but have you checked your owners manual. It actually states it on there....my 325i was limited to 128 as stated in manual (if I remember) pre-chip. Now its unlimited...fastest I've dared to get it to was 138mph.

the problem with my 318i is that once it reaches 135km, the car starts hesitating for some reason, someone might know why it does this???????

What is the rpm when that happens? Does it hesitate at 135 km/h in both fourth and fifth gear?

The 318ti is geared pretty high. At 110 MPH the motor was turning at about 5200 RPM's. My 330i at the same speed only has the motor turning at 3,400 RPM's.

Before I ask an engine guru, what engine does it have: M42? M44? Four different engines went into the 318i depending on when it was produced and for what market.

Yes, I have. The first would be very similar to my old 1993 M40 318i; the second to my current M44 318is. I didn't realize that Canada ever received anything with the M40/M43 engines; I thought you guys largely got U.S. market cars with a Canadian options package.

The BMW 318i is a wicked car, i don't know why people bash it so much.

I think they drive the car in the wrong gear. I find an "underpowered" 318is with a manual transmission is just fine up to 190 km/h, and like most here who drive BMWs, I don't exactly dawdle.
I might wish for a larger engine if I drove faster or towed a trailer. |

The guys need more information as there are a number of things that might cause the car to hesistate around 4000 rpm.
For a start:

*The car was manufactured 06/96 and has 240,000km *Goes for service when the lights go out, and gets serviced only at BMW *No just 5th gear on the highway Could this be a wear and tear thing?????????? Last edited by BMW528i_Bilal; 05-17-2005 at 08:04 PM. |
