PCD-elivered!!!!

Man! What an amazing experience we had picking up my e92 from the Performance Center. I highly recommend it!! The experience was perfect from start to finish.

Here's how it went down... We flew from Baltimore to Charlotte on Sunday morning, picked up a rental car and drove down to Greenville. We dropped off the rental at the Greenville airport and called the hotel for pick up. We were picked up and driven to the hotel in a 530xi wagon.

I have a cousin who lives in Greenville, so we opted to go out to dinner with her and her husband rather than having the complimentary dinner at the Marriott. However, the breakfast on Monday morning suggests that the hotel restaurant would have been quite good. In the morning, the hotel's fleet of "shuttles" was joined by two M6's. There was a pretty large group of M owners who were going over to the Center to enjoy their customer appreciation day.

After breakfast, we were shuttled over to the Center where I first saw my car in its delivery room. It was so cool to see my car sitting there like that!

We met Donnie and Dan, our instructors for the day. We had a quick classrom explanation of the BMW safety features, then headed out to the course to our 335i's for our first event: The Breaking Exercise. During this exercise, we took the cars up to 40, 45, then 50 mph and slammed the break when instructed to do so, while turning the car to avoid hitting some cones. It was really fun to romp on the breaks and feel the ABS system at work. It is truly amazing how well you can steer the car while you are jamming the break like that. When Jason got his turn to do the exercise, my hair flew straight out in front of me when he hit the breaks - Donnie got a kick out of that.

Next, we got to drive through a small course - there were some turns, a slalom, and some drifts. It was fun, but the person in the car in front of us was afraid to drive fast, so we had to do most of it at a much slower pace than we would have liked. We did get to run it quickly a few times, when Dan held us up at the end of the course to make some room between us and the next car. By this point, I had a perma-grin plastered on my face (I may have gotten a facial muscle injury from all of the smiling!).

After the road course, we got to test out how well the traction stability control works by taking the cars out on the skid pad. What a blast!! First, we went around with the DTC off completely, which ended up in spinning out into the grass. Next, we went around with the DTC on, which allowed us to control the car around the skid pad. Funnnnn!!!!

After the skid pad, we were brought in to meet my e92...

Jonathan performed my delivery - he was great. We walked into the delivery room where we were greeted with a pound of BMW coffee, my keys, and my car. Jason and I walked around oohing and ahing for a few minutes before Jonathan began to go over the car with us. I have to say that none of the pictures I took truly capture the color of the car - Barbara has to be seen in person to really see how gorgeous it is. Here are some of the "first impression" shots I took of the car.

The exterior:

The very clean cream beige interior:

I had them install a burl shifter at the Performance Center. I really love how it looks:

We pulled the car outside so that we could set up the Sirius after Jonathan went over all of the I-Drive and other features of the car. It is even prettier in the sun

After delivery, we had lunch then went back out to the track...

Donnie took us out for a hot lap in an M5 - one of the highlights of the day. It was so exciting, and Donnie is truly a master. I don't even know how to describe the manuevers he did - I guess you will have to go and experience it for yourselves to find out . The hot lap culminated in a controlled (by Donnie, with DTC off) ride around the skid pad and a two-spin spin out for good measure

After that excitement, it was off to the off road course in an X5. It is a good thing I drove first, because there was one part of the course, where you go up a hill and come down on an angle with one (and at times two) wheel in the air that was so nerve wracking, if I had been Jason's passenger the first time through, I might have chickened out - and I don't scare easily!

We drove through water:

Went up hills:

And could see nothing but sky at times:

It took a lot of concentration.

After the excitement of the off-road course, we headed over to the Zentrum...

There are so many cool cars in the Zentrum - really amazing to see in and of itself!

One of my favorite cars in the Zentrum is the Alpina Z8 roadster.

I also really liked the Beemer they have on display for the "Art Cars" exhibit.

But my favorite car of all was the one parked out front while we were in there.

We hopped into that one at the end of the day, and I drove us to Winston Salem. We followed a course given to us by Donnie (THANKS, DONNIE!!!), which included some of the twistiest roads I have ever traveled. What a blast!! We made our way home from Winston Salem this evening, and my car is safely stored in the garage... for now!

I can't thank the wonderful people at the Performance Center enough for showing us such a fantastic time! We are definitely planning on heading back down there to do some training. Amazing is an understatement to describe our trip.

Awesome, I'm glad you had a great time. The car looks great, no chance of swaping for the Z8 eh? We can't wait for our trip in Oct. to the two-day school. Who took care of the dogs while you were gone?

Damn, I can't wait. ED + PCD... BMW sure makes their customers feel like they are special. The people who drive the car off the dealer's lot are really missing out.

There will be west-coast, as well as, chicago locations for performance driving. Not sure if that will include delivery.

LOL. As much as I love the looks of the Z8, it wouldn't make a great daily driver.

A friend of mine took care of the pup while we were away.

Clare,

did you do ED+PCD? I'm wondering how long it took for the whole re-delivery? From Europe to PC?

Car looks great.

I do have a question, is the "breaking exercise" one where you break the entire car or just certain parts.

I only did PCD, so I'm not sure what the total time would be for ED. It took approximately six weeks from build date to delivery for me (I would have gotten the car about two weeks earlier had I opted for delivery at my dealer). SO worth the wait

I lived in Mauldin (basically Greenville) for years and was back down on a business trip recently. Schleped it over to the factory to see what was different in the Zentrum since last I was there (02-02-2002 with a '79 2002 tii owning friend). Definitely worth a trip just to check out the exhibit if you want to kill a couple of hours. Since I am planning on getting a E90/E92 this coming year, will pick it up in Greer if we can't swing the time off for Munich. And yes, the factory is in Greer (that's pronounced Grrrr locally), not Spartanburg - I don't care what BMWNA says

Great write up - thanks for the pics and experience. There are some wonderful roads in the Upstate (head west to Easley then blast up towards The Cliffs - home of the BMW Nationwide Tour event annually). Alternatively, you can take 123 towards Furman University and then go wherever from there - my first choice would be Hendersonville, NC. Beautiful area. Awesome color choice on the car. I really need to go it in person but the shots you posted are nice!

If you are a member of the CCA, come out to the Columbia Greene Turtle Happy Hour on September 13 - I'll be there with the new ride. The group has been growing each week as more people here about it (Sept. 13 will be the fourth one in Columbia).

It was nice meeting you. Thank you for going over my car in so much detail. There is so much to figure out and learn using the I Drive, and your information really helped!
