97 BMW 328i E36 sedan steering wheel squealing and turning difficulties

i have this car

when i make turns the steering wheel does not move to the center
as all cars are suppose to

like when making a typical left turn the steering gradually moves to the center freely to
keep the wheels straight

what is the problem?

and when at neutral i hear squeals inside the car

I would have to bet something is wrong with the power steering. The road should help pull the wheels back to straight if all is working right.

wait im confused... is the sound coming from the engine bay? or the steering wheel covers?

engine bay... prolly power stearing. Stearing wheel, get a shop to lube up the wheel or stearing collumn, they will know which one. Mine did that for a little bit, but it was nothing like the way you described it. It just made a slight squeel, I didnt notice a differance in performance as stearing is concerned though.

I have a squeaky wheel with a little steering play.

1) it looks like the squeak is not DIY. Not worth it?
2) Steering play, I'm guessing, is not DIY.

After reading this post and a looking at the resonses, I am with Pirate on this one. Check the tire Pressure.

It should be anywhere from 28-40PSI, depending on what size tires and wheels you are running.

The noise in the steering wheel is the rear cover of the wheel rubbing on the steering colum. Mine also does this and I would doubt it has anything to do with your problem.

Try this first before you replace anything else.

The second thing to try, after checking the tires, is a wheel alinment.
