Welcome welcome, How quick does the temp go up, also what does it do when you turn the ac off? Try the search button too(make sure your in the e30 forum first, then type in overheating). It's the best way to find quick answers to common problems. If you can't find it still then write back. Where in Jersey are you?

my car does the same thing....if stuck in a traffic jam, the temp will go up, but only when the AC is on. I could be totally wrong, but I think it may have to do with your aux fan(fan you can see through the grill) not coming on at a low speed. I know that mine does not come on until the temp guage goes to almost 3/4 and even then it only stays on for a second, but the temp goes down a bit. When you are driving on the highway, this does not happen b/c all of the air coming through your grill is acting as the aux fan. From what I have read and searched, the aux fan should come on immediately when the AC is turned on. There are 2 speeds to the aux fan..low and high. If the fan does not come on when the AC is on, then it could be your low speed relay that is bad, but most likely it is the aux fan resistor that needs replacing....seems pretty common. Since your car does not heat up past the 3/4 mark, then I would assume that the high speed works. In my car you can hear the fan come on when the temp reaches 3/4. Again, I could be wrong, but it may be one thing you want to take a look at.
