You can see I am swinging wildy in car ideas, manic-depressively lurching from old 911's to new X5's. |

Why do you want gross weight? The vehicle is never at that weight.
The X5 is very heavy. Even in 5-speed, it will feel heavy (0-60 in about 8 seconds flat). I've never driven one. Think Heavy, Heavy, Heavy. Now, it handles very well... for an SUV. Don't even (for a second) consider an X5 over a 911 if you like sporty driving.

I actually had a 3.0 to drive for 3 days while BMW messed around with my first 323i. I liked it okay; like you said, the sensation of mass never goes away. |

The section 179 is a great benefit, will be using this on my taxes this year. Bought my '03 3.0 in October of last year.
I'll be writing off approx 27k this year, to put me in the '0' tax bracket, and this year, won't be paying any estimated taxes....basically no fed taxes for the next 2 years, maybe 3. This was the deciding factor why I chose the X5 over the Lexus or others I looked at. Gonna miss the monthly write off for mileage, but at year end, the difference is dramatic. All X5's have GVWR of 6005, and I think BMW planned it that way!!!......too bad more biz owners don't know about the section 179 accelerated depreciation...... |

This is in essence the gist of 179. Since 9-11, you can use 30% of the new purchase price of vehicle of GVWR >6000 lbs as a deductable item, as well as taking 20% of the remainder of the cost to depreciate in the first year of ownership. After that you depreciate the vehicle over 4 additional years. The biggest tax break to a "normal" person, provided you can purchase the vehicle for business purposes. I presume that the 5 speed, being approx 50lbs lighter in unladen weight, wouldn't make the 6000 lb cutoff. |

My understanding is that ALL X5's have a GVWR of 6005, regardless of the stick or manual. I could be wrong, but this is what the manual states.....
I also heard the section 179 will go to 75,000.00 for 2003, if bought during this year.....great for accel. depreciation!! |

Actually, for tax year 2002, you can deduct 27,000.00 off the first year depreciation, provided you don't have other biz assets to offset it,............also need to consider the % of biz use.
