Spring tire shopping...

Otherwise known as swallow hard and use your wife's credit card.

The gray car needs new street tires, enter a set of SO3s in 235/40 & 255/40 sizes.

Next on the shopping list, two sets of Hoosiers.

With any luck, the Hoosiers will get us through a couple of Evolution Schools and part way through this season of autocrossing.

Now if it would only stop snowing

Randy, why not get a set of Kumho MXs and tell us how they work.

I have heard some people claim they are on par with the Falken Azenis RS. I find that hard to swallow.

Unfortunately Tire Rack did not test the Kumho against the SO3s. And since they changed to IS300s for testing, I am not sure how much you can gain from comparing the SO3 versus KD test and the KD versus MX test.

ANd the good news, the MXs are cheaper than the SO3s, so you can buy an extra set of Hoosiers.

I went for wear

I picked up the es-100 yoko's. I'm tired of buying tires every month. The numbers were close to the so3's but had longer tread wear numbers. And saved a few hundred. I can't drive anyway so the difference in performance is mute.

Too late, the order went in before the post was made.

By mid to late summer, the black car will be needing tires so I will consider them then.

I have to say though, as impressed as I am with the SO3s, it's hard to imagine that another tire can close the gap towards the Hoosier.
Are they equally impressive in wet & dry conditions?

It's in the wet that the SO3s really shine.

Heck I don't take the coupe OUT! Long winter its been.

Wish the SO-3's had a tread wear rating of 10
These HiPerf tires are expensive. Forget it if you drive w/o asc. I guess its a pair a year. Gotta face it.

Actually, the SO3s on the black car have done very well for wear.

They have at least 20,000 miles on them (18k on the black car before putting on the snows for the winter and about 2.4k while on the gray car for a trip to Florida @ Thanksgiving) and they did close to 60 runs at an Evolution Autocross School (mostly Sue driving-I only made the three famous runs in the wet that I use to knock the dry performance of the Pilot Sports).

Sue seems to think that tires should last 80,000 miles, but I'm working on changing that paradigm
