I have been struggling with a fuel pump issue on my 318i as well. I can tell you what I have learned, maybe it will help. There are two wires coming off the fuel pump, one is ground the other goes to fuse 11 on the panel just in front of the firewall. From the fuse it goes back to a relay also right in front of the firewall. Remove the wiring harness cover and you will see three relays, the center one is the fuel pump relay. The relay is "turned on" by the DME Motronic control.

Check the fuse, and check for continuity from the fuse to the fuel pump. You can test the relay, unplug it and apply voltage to terminals 30 and 86 and ground terminal 85. you should hear a click and there should be voltage at terminal 87. If all these test ok your problem could be any of the sensors that the DME monitors, fuel pressure sensor, air temp sensor etc.

Good luck!
