Bimmerfest 2008 Rally

For those of you who live for the drive, the rally is just right for you. However, after the great dissapointment of last years unnofficial rally the question must be asked if the year we will be privilaged enough to have an official drive. The pattern seems to be that every other year there is an official rally so lets hope that tradition remains.

the rally is the event which follow immediatly after the prize drawings. It is a cruise that goes up the coatsline then comes back and around and ends right near the showgrounds. But due to the lack of intelligence in some of the attendees those of us who are responsible most likey wont be able to enjoy the real thing as opposed to an unnofficial drive like last year.

I wish there was a (sane) way to do this as the Bimmerfest Road Rally was always my most favorite part of the day and the experience. A few years ago it started to get too big and out of control. Then there were freeway accidents, drivers getting ticketed for excessive speed (100 mph range), and complete idiots spinning donuts and spraying gravel on the other cars while showing off on the freeway offramps.

If somebody would be willing to take the initiative to contact the CHP and coordinate an escort and traffic management for the full loop, we could bring it back....

In 2006 there was somebody handing out little flyers giving information on the un-official rally and that seemed to work out pretty good. This way those who want to drive together afterwards can meet and the responsibilty isn't put on anyone or bimmerfest. Everyone will be responsible for their own actions

Having a CHP escort is possible, but is that what the rally enthusiasts want? Probably not.

i don't see what would be so bad about it? i mean they are going to be out in force anyways, we might as well have them on our side instead of against us.

That's a pretty good ideal, having the CHP on our side and guiding the whole rally...but to honestly think they would do it is totally out of the question.

Just started perusing the CA vehicle code and found this:

Division 11 Chapter 3 Article 2

21705. Motor vehicles being driven outside of a business or residence district in a caravan or motorcade, whether or not towing other vehicles, shall be so operated as to allow sufficient space and in no event less than 100 feet between each vehicle or combination of vehicles so as to enable any other vehicle to overtake or pass.

So the actual act of all of us driving together is NOT illegal as long as we leave enough room for other cars to overtake or pass any of us.

Now I think the problem we have is gathering everyone up and stoping on the side of the road. Can someone help out and browse through the Vehicle Code to see what the laws are? Here is the link to the CA VC:

I think the Gilroy caravan fails this test.. Though I think it was 2 years ago that the cop made his way allll the way thru our 140+ car caravan from behind, no problems, didn't pull anyone over

Problem is the number of idiots that treat the road like a track during the caravan; and unfortunately there is no real way of keeping them out of the group. I think the last 2 years of doing a more covert caravan is a better way of making sure some of them don't make it, but there's always one or two that ruin it. If you want to set up a drive - early morning before the fest might be better - keep it hush hush. When you get a couple hundred cars together though there is no easy way of organizing it.

Did anyone hear back from the CHP? We could develop by-laws and have participants sign a "hold harmless" agreement that would shield the orginizers of the event from any litigation? I am not a lawyer, but I think there are a few participants that are. Just a thought.

Yeah but good luck finding someone to take that on. Those releases are never airtight.

I spend enough time behind the wheel. Time not spent stuck in traffic trying to "rally" = time that could be spend 'relaxing' at the hotel with good b'fest friends.

The unofficial caravans work just as well IMO. Last year I ended up leading a bunch of people through the 154 as they were heading back up north. It started with 5 other cars and when I turned around to head back to my home there were about 40+ bimmers that had tagged along and became a caravan. I'm lookin' forward to this year's drive(s).

So.....are we having an unofficial Rally?

We should have a meeting at the event to organize.
