E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Ugly deck lid spoiler?

Boy, is it just me or is that one of the ugliest deck lid spoilers since the E36 M3? (which is what I am driving now).

I'm not crazy about the paint job either but at least the production cars won't have that paint job (please?).

When I first saw a 1-series in Japan earlier this year I thought, "boy that would look nice in my garage next to the M".

Every time I look at that concept paint job my eyes bug out just a little (not in a good way). However, with a standard paint job that car is really starting to grow on me...

Man, that's a sweet car. I'm not too crazy about the paint. But the interior!!! Wow. A real meat and potatoes car that screams to driving enthusiasts.

One thing I wonder about WRT this concept. How do you signficantly lower a car's weight without super-expensive components? If they have to be expensive, is that in line with the original theme from decades ago? IOW, was the original "affordable"?

The original tii was by no means "affordable". In '72 a tii listed for over $5,000, which is somewhere north of $26,000 today (using shady Internet inflation calculators). For a more understandable comparison, this was the exact same price as a new corvette at the time.

As for weight - I think they mentioned that the tii uses carbon fiber for several parts, as well as aluminum in places the stock 1er uses steel.

So then the car would be much more expensive ????? ...or will content be removed in other areas to keep the price equal?

I don't know how much weight reduction is needed to please those who are asking for weight reduction, but it seems like a few components can't add up to more than say 200lbs.

Another thing that I forgot to mention (but have said several times elsewhere) - the tii car has no moonroof. This is a rather significant savings (80-100lbs?), and would also lower the car's center of mass.

The best way to reduce weight is to simplify the car, and reduce the power. A 300 hp motor requires bigger cooling system (oil coolers weigh how much?), bigger brakes, more rubber, more reinforcements etc.

Make a car with fewer electronics, less sound deadening, and a 220 hp four, that doesn't require huge brakes and multiple coolers.

It will feel alive, and won't need 300 hp to be fun.

I agree except the few high-output four-cylinder engines I've driven are not fun for me; not enough torque. For example, I've been test-driving many roadsters recently and the S2000 to me feels gutless until 6200 rpm. The saturn sky redline, OTOH, has a MUCH more fun engine. (I'm speaking only of the engine)

Something like the 2.5L four in the late model E30 M3 would be perfect.

I love everything about this car with the exception of the nasty paint job and the boring front end. Why would they design a more sedate version of the 135's lower front section? IMO, the front of the 135 is a better thought out execution of design.
