Question on windshield repair

I got a rock chip in my windshield on the driver's side -- in my line of sight. MY insurance company said that is up to the glass repair shop if they need to replace or repair it (either way no deductible). I don't want them to replace it -- since I know the seal, alignment, etc will never be as good as factory. the total diameter of the damage is maybe 10 mm-- has anyone had a similar thing happen- and did you repair or replace? What repair shop did you use? How were the results? Should I argue strongly for repair vs replacement? Thanks. Surprisingly, in 13 years of driving, I've never gotten a rock chip before!

I just had one fixed, insurance company paid for it. It will not make it go away, just keep it from spreading.

I had a tiny chip with 2 cracks about 1/8" coming out of it. They drilled a small hole in the chip & injected some clear glue into it. It looks no worse or better than before.

The guy who did the repair said that BMW front windows are very easy to replace...apparently he does them all the time.

Chris - that sounds exactly like my chip. Was your chip in your line of sight? Apparently, the glass installer I use can refuse to repair it (and insist on replacing it) if the chip is in the line of sight. Apparently, the repair can slightly distort your vision, so they're wary of safety problems.
good the hear that he thought replacing BMW windows was easy. What company did you use? Safelite?

It was Glass America...I didn't pick them; my ins. co. sent them out. With my insurance (State Farm in IL) they will pay for any repair w no deductible, but if I want to replace the window I pay the deductible ($500)...so I figured I've got nothing to lose. I called my ins. agent to check on the coverage and they had someone come out to my house to fix it inside 4 hours.

The chip is in my view, but not directly. About 1/3 up from the bottom and 6" from the left side. I'll let it go for awhile, see if I get any more chips before replacing it. I do have LOTS of tiny little pits in the windshield, with only 7K on the car.

I asked the glass guy if these windshields were especially soft & he said almost all glass is made by 2 companies, just stamped with the manufacturer's logo.

The second day after picking up my car in Munich (ED) I got hit by a rock chip on the Autobahn. I contacted the German insurance company. Since I did not have enough time to get the winshield fixed in Europe they agreed to have it done in the States. I also contacted BMW AG and informed my dealer. When I picked up the car here, everything was taken care of somewhere between Cologne (where I dropped off the car) and the local center. BMW had replaced the chipped windshield. I have not had any problem with it since June. Just make sure they use the correct part because there seem to be many versions of the windshield depending on model you drive and equipment installed.
