e65 MP3/IPOD Integration (745i 2003)

Is there a way to get MP3 capability via CD or IPOD integration into a 745i 2003?

Is it posible to replace the Multi-disc CD changer with the new 2006 changer which does play MP3s. Would this require a software update? If I replace the single cd/radio unit with the 2007 model would that work? Perhaps replacing the CD Changer with one of those Hard Drive MP3 players or an IPOD Adapter.

this road has been walked on many times... The 02-03 idrive base runs on a microsoft os, the newer (I believe 04 and up) are running on a diff os, which is why there is incompatibility with certain electrical components... I read about it on this forum somewhere, under the general tab...

Smile e65 MP3/IPOD Integration (745i 2003)

Let's stay on track with the initial question fellas. I am really interested in the potential hard drive solution. Can someone shed some light on this topic. Better yet, is there a firmware that enables the CD changer to read MP3s?

All of the threads ended unresolved. Does anyone know if there is a solution that allows me to use the iDrive to navigate my iPod. I have a 2005 745i

I'm in the same boat...2005 745, built too early. It is sincerely my biggest regret about buying the car. Using an FM modulator sucks when you need to cross a couple state lines and the stations start bleeding over. I'd pay a lot for a solution that doesn't require soldering or ripping up the carpets. I don't know why some adapter can't make an IPod mimic the electronic characteristics of the 6-disc changer. But, then again, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I dislike FM transmitters.

No offence, but you guys in the USA and Canada don't have the problems we have in the Netherlands.
Here, the FM frequency's change per region.

So, I live in Zoetermeer, when I go to The Hague for example, witch is a trip of about 8 miles, I have to change the frequency on the transmitter and on the car.

Far from ideal.

I do have the Kensington FM transmitter that goes directly onto the iPod dock connector. So no extra powerfeed Necessary

I have to agree with Lappy. FM modules are out! The low audio quality is not worth the eye sore it creates in this flagship vehicle. I did find a nice setup made by Harmon Kardon, the manufacturer of some BMW audio component. It's very sophisticated, but I don't like tampering with the vehicle electronics.

Check out this link:

I appreciate the suggestion of FM Modulation, however, the quality sucks, so that option is out. There must be a way. The end solution needs to be integrated into the car so that the controls (iDrive, Steering Wheel) can be used.

Is there a way to replace/upgrade the DVD Navigation Drive in the trunk to one that plays DVD/MP3s? Don't really care about playing DVDs but want the MP3 functionallity.

Options to review:
-Replace 6 disc cd changer with model that plays MP3: Won't work because of software being incompatiable?
-Replace 6 disc cd changer with IPOD Adapter: ??
-Replace 6 disc cd changer with HARD DRIVE MP3 Player: ??
-Replace 1 Disc CD/Radio, in dash: ??
-Replace DVD NAV Drive with DVD player w/ MP3: ??

Has anyone done/tried any of these?

My setup

CPT8000 BTUM $400
IPhone Unlocked 1.0.2 $499
DLO Transpod $79

All my contacts (see photo on top) get uploaded when I get in the car, and if I get a call while I'm listening to the ipod, music pauses and full BMW speaker phone system activates. With the right eq setup, I don't mind at all about the sound quality and it is in my mind most effective way to enjoy full bluetooth phone and audio integration on 2002, I mean, 2002 745Li. Who knew?

Zoek, thx for the info... Unlocked Iphone cool. I would really like a Hard Wired solution but it's good to see that your FM solutions works.

Sorry guys but the only solution for now is to get the factory tuner modified to accept an external audio source.

Look at this post it show an ipod and nav-tv install

thanks BPautosound!

Your solution looks good, even gets video and it's hard wired! The only negative I see is that you can't control the iPod through the iDrive, steering wheel, or voice controls and you have to have 2 manual switches to switch between audio & video sources. So it's not a truley integrated solution. However, it looks like the best solution so far!

Hi BPautosound, mine is a 2002 745Li. My Navi is just CD, not the DVD. Would it work if i have the same set up?

My navigation was replaced by my insurance company.
It will work with either cd or dvd navigations. The wiring coming out if them is the same.

YES....
See my post on the successful interior facelift upgrade. It was too easy and worked a treat. There is no need to buy mob ridge or anything like that and no programming is necessary. You remove the CD Changer in your dash and throw it in the bin or sell it on eBay, then, connect the iPOD unit into exactly the same connector as the CD Changer was in, zip tie it down. Purchase the replacement dash trim which does not have the opening in it for the CD Changer. Turn your car on, wait a few minutes whilst the MMI discovers the iPOD interface and then it all works fine. If you have the pre facelift Mmi you won't get all the text and song lists etc, but, if you do what I did, and buy the facelift MMI and fir that in, you get all the text, song lists etc and you control it all from your iDrive. I did no programming. The only thing that you may need to do is the next time your at BMW, ask them to include the iPOD retrofit on your cars order on the MOST. It doesn't stop it from working, it just stops future programming updates because the MOST hasn't been "officially" told it is there.
This was the same when I upgraded my NAV unit to the facelift NAV unit. It worked straight away but hadn't been "officially" added to the MOST network, so when I was at the BMW dealer getting a new fuel pressure sensor fitted, they "officially" added the NAV to the MOST network. The BMW service manager says, all they are doing is "officially" adding it to the cars order, the MOST network so when they go to updates in the future, the program won't hang because it has encountered an unknown device on the MOST network.
So in summary, the genuine BMW iPod retrofit is a straight plug and play, no NCS, no coding, no nothing, and if you have the facelift MMI you will get full song text and lists etc. If you have the pre-facelift screen, you ant see the song text but you can still control your iPod......................... sorry if you spent money on a Mobridge.......
Read Paper's post att eh start of this thread and what he saw and was explained to him is true.... I have done it myself.

And by the way, if you don't have the CD Changer in your dash, you can still do this iPOD retrofit. With the retrofit kit you purchase this adapter cable, Cable adapter 61120412795 $38.25, and all will be well..... again commiseration's if your bought a Mobridge.....
