E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

128i 'vert and 135i coupe at Performance Center

BMW had a 128 'vert and a 135 coupe at the Performance center for internal training.

They were parked out back, in plain sight. No more secrets. Debbie took two digital pictures. I'll post more photos after I get my film developed.

The 128 had German airbag warning stickers but a US spec gauge cluster. Montego over taupe. Loaded with options including iDrive. Very little room in the back seat of the 'vert. The trunk is decent sized and can get bigger with the top up, just like the Z4. It looked like the rear seat would fold down, but I didn't have time to play with that. If the car has comfort access (this one did) you can fold the top remotely.

I didn't think to ask if I could drive either one. --> Really stupid me not asking.

More photos

Two more photos from Friday at the Performance Center:

2002tii, 135i coupe, 128i convertible. BMW is clearly trying to make the connection between the 2002 and the 1 series, although I don't see it. The new red reminds me the old Cinnabar red. The 'vert is Montego blue. If I order a 1 series it will be Monaco over Taupe. The 2002tii looked great.

There is an iPod sized slot in the center console. I asked and apparently it is for the passenger cup holder.

Not very good photo of the 128i with the top down. Note the lack of a license plate holder.

How does the taupe look? Kinda grey-ish in those pics. And no contrasting carpets huh?

To my eyes BMW's new Taupe is a beige gray. Hard to be sure as Montego is so loud it swaps the interior. The dash in the 128i was all black with a dark wood trim. Sorry, neither of us recall the carpet color. Back seat was very tight. The convertible has the sail panel blind spots common to a soft top.

I think Taupe would be better with Monaco then Montego.

I only had a few minutes in each car as I was sneaking a peak during the time left over after our Delivery. If I had a few more minutes I would have sat in the convertible and adjusted the mirrors to try and gauge how bad the blind spots are.

Interior looks looks better without nav/iDrive (135i didn't have nav)

The NAV monitor overpowers the dash, IMO.

Things may change a bit. I suspect the convertible is pre-production.
