Comfort Seats: Opinions?

I would appreciate any opinions compared to standard seats. I will not be ordering the sport package, so sports seats (which I have had on several previous BMWs) are not an option.
Thanks. Alan

The Comfort seats on the X3 are the same has the ones available in the E53 X5. I had a little bit of seat time, and they're decent. Note that certain (cool) interior colors are not available with Comfort Seats. If you want to splurge, go ahead, but I don't feel its a necessity, as the standard seats are pretty good.

When I ordered my 07 I test sat both seats and had a problem with the head restraint on the comfort seats. I could not move the head restraint back far enough for me. I could not get comfortable with the comfort seats.

Having owned BMW's with and without comfort seats, I believe they are a must.

The ability to articulate the upper portion of the seat to conform to your upper body is a godsend and makes a world of difference.

My wife and I just ordered a 2008 X5 and comfort seats were the first option I selected. In my opinion, they are worth every penny as they elevate the sitting comfort to a new level.

Just took delivery (ED) of an X3 with comfort seat option. 1300 miles on the ED and I think they are just right. Only downside is loss of Tobacco color option.

You mean "DIS-comfort" seats?

I drove one with comfort seats as a Demo for 4 months last winter, the first 07 we got in- it took me three weeks to get a comfortable position & even that position was not comfortable on a long trip! I eventually got used to them, but they are TOTALLY NOT WORTH THE EXTRA $$$! The "regular" X3 seats are the best standard seats in any BMW (short of a 7-series). I've driven them all at some point, and the only seats I prefer would be the X3 sport seat and the 650 sport seat (which is heavenly by the way).

Good luck with your decision!

PS- I forgot to mention that I would ALWAYS take the comfort seats on any 5-series and any X5. The sport seats on the new X5 are horrible (top part of backrest is too far back for me). There is a big difference though to the X3, as mentioned before they are more like the "old" comfort seats in the 06-older X5 & other previous-generation cars. Try to find one that has the confort seats so you can drive it for at least a few miles & even just sit in the car for a good 15-20 minutes if they will let you!

We've driven X3s with all 3 types of seats. We ordered our X3 with the standard seats...

The sport seat is superb--they way it hugs the body. The comfort seats are uncomfortable. But, personal choice and how you feel in that seat is what counts.

The only way you will actually know is by putting your butt in the bucket.

Opinions are just that. Unless you know the poster's comfort values and that their posterior/physiology is similar to yours, you can't win.

You have to do the research yourself. That said -

FWIW, I think the std seats are great. I'm 6'3", 250#. My wife likes them , too. She's 5'4", 140#. Both of us are late 50's, are prone to 'airline sciatica', but can do multiple 500+ mile days in our '04 X3. (FWIW)

Re: Comfort Seats really a subjective thing

Guys....the comfort seats are a subjective thing....here is my take on it. My wife is a little woman and Im a big guy....she has back problems from a bad car accident in the past (non BMW and never again will I buy anything that does not come from Bavaria). She has found that the regular and sport seats in the x3 or x5 are extremely uncomfortable and that the comfort seats are the only ones that work for her. The reasoning is the ability to adjust the upper portion of the seat for maximum upper back and neck support. Initially I thought the comfort seats were fine and nothing special...however after having 2 cars (x3 and x5) with the comfort seats I find them to be an absolute must. They allow me to contour the seat for proper neck support in a way I never could with standard or sport seats.....everytime I call Adrian for a new car I tell him that the first MANDATORY option is comfort seats!!! You need to spend some time in the seat to be sure if or not the feature is worth it for you. Good luck.

Alpine300ZHP is absolutely correct when he speaks of subjectivity.

I too was in a bad accident--5 cars--and later took a bad fall on ice. My issues are all low back herniations. It's one of the reasons I go back to the X. Anyway, during the test drives the comfort seats did not work for me. I felt like I did not have the support in the low back/sides as I did in the sport seat.

That's why...it's important to understand that each poster can share w/you his or her experiences, which are important and helpful...but you must insist on trying all the different options before making a commitment.

My X5 had comfort seats, and my X3 has sport seats. I am 5'11" and 175lbs, and I prefer the sport seats because of the thigh support and the"hug" fit on the sides of your upper torso. For me, the X5 comfort seats actually made my back hurt on long drives.

My neighbor is about 25lbs heavier than me but about the same height...He prefers the comfort seats. I tend to think the comfort seats favor a wider upper body.

We have them in our 2008 X3, and they are great. I had sport seats in our prior BMW (an E46 coupe), and these are much more comfortable. My wife hated the seats in the other Bimmer, and she can't stop praising how great these are. If you have any kind of back issues or plan on doing long distance driving, these are a must have IMO.

Dis-"Comfort" Seats for the Tall

Having had several BMWs before, most had comfortable seats (i.e. 1984 E30). I ordered the comfort seat because it felt comfortable "in the showroom".

BIG mistake. I am 6'2" and the lumbar support doesn't go high enough for my frame, and my thorax is too long, so my shoulders are almost above the main portion of the seat. This results in my thoracolumbar spine being kyphotic (curled forward) and shoulders w/o support.

My advice - IF YOU ARE TALL - is to get standard seats or find some kind of foam back support for your back or you will be in agony.

That's my two cents!

Good luck.

Has anyone realized that the standard seats in the X3 are actually pretty well bolstered in terms of lateral support? I stepped from my X3 into a 128i cabrio with standard seats, and it felt like I was sitting on a park bench!! Ditto when I go from the X3 into a standard 3 series. Geez, BMW really is making cars for Americans thesedays

When I bought my 08 X3, I was thinking of getting the comfort seats. When I tried both standard and comfort seats during the test drive, I decided not to go with the comfort. It was an easy decision. My wife also added that getting the comfort seats is not worth the money...

She has comfort seats on her E46..

Comfort is subjective, but I'm 6'4", and I find the seats very comfortable. My wife is also quite tall, and she thinks they are the best option that we have on the car. I would try them, and base your decision on that. Good luck.
