HID xenon upgrade for e39 528i

Hi all
Has anyone managed to upgrade their factory halogens to xenon hid. Does it require the headlights to be replaced or just a HID kit is fine. I tried a couple of HID kits from ebay but they gave headlight error on the dashboard. So I removed them. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
riz

You need to get some projectors. So you dont blind other drivers.

Talking

Projectors are a must.

I went from stock halogens to non-AE stock Xenon. Simple switch, but if the lights are turned off it will tell you that a bulb is out, simply turn them on and the error message goes away.

you must buy resistors when you do this, or disconnect the sensor. Or, buy OEM's.

I think my headlight does have a projector but it one of old style type. It has a flat lens around the projector. I have attached a pic from Internet for reference. Is this ok or I need to replace the headlights.

On a side note I am able to get proper advice from real bmw enthusiasts not some standard mechanic down the road.

thanks

if that is what your lights look like, you already have xenons.
