Sat reception

Ok... I know I have been down this road before, but I want to resurrect the topic..

The Satellite reception in my 2008 X3 is HORRENDOUS! It cuts out so often, it's to the point of being useless.

My Dad's Satellite in his 2011 328xi is unbelievable. We recently took a 1,300 mile trip and it never cut out once. If we took that trip in my X3, we would have turned it off after 10 minutes. Just changing the satellite channel is a 45 second ordeal of cutting in/out until the signal locks.

Anyway, it's my understanding that at some point, BMW changed out the satellite "flux capacitor module" due to exactly this issue. Does anyone know exactly how I can identify the "bad" module and the newer updated GOOD ones?

I want to first validate that I DO have a "bad" module and that my problem isn't something else... then I want to know what to search for as a replacement.

I would appreciate it!

Would you be willing to take a pic of your sat module part number? I was told it was changed sometime in model year 2008... so i bet you got the good one!

in the trunk.. mounted somewhere by the battery. I believe it's a small black box with SiriusXM markings on it somewhere.

I have the new version as well and have no real complaints. I will have to look tonight as to part number but it is stamped that it was made by Alpine.

Actually in the rear quarter panel on the left if you are facing forward. Sorry to hear it stinks as I am an engineer for Sirius XM. If you can change the module to an XM one and NOT the Sirius one you will get much better reception and sound quality.

I cant tell you the details in a public forum, signed a NDA.

My local dealer tells me there is a newer module available for my X3.... The module number is: 65-12-0-439-436 and is $535 NEW + tax...

But they also tell me they aren't aware of it solving any reception problems and want me to schedule an appointment to check the antenna. Ugh... I'm going to double check that the antenna lead wire hasn't wiggled loose on the module...

Not sure why there would be a "newer module" available if it didn't fix SOMETHING....?

Hmmmm... then maybe my issue isn't the receiver afterall...

All I know is my Dad's old car was an X5... he had the EXACT same reception issues... Satellite was useless in his car... BMW eventually replaced the "radio", and the problem was instantly solved... He sold that car a month later, so I don't really know if they replaced the head unit, or the receiver module... His X5 was a 2010.

I feel your pain on the sat reception. It drives me nuts in my '08 x3 as well. Moved from Phoenix to Orlando and same issues both areas, both in town and out from the city. I'll try to get a pic or part number off the unit in the car and see if it is the old or new number. My husband's '11 3 series has no issues with reception, here nor when we were back in PHX.

It also doesn't update the channel line up either, but I think there's a whole other thread about that somewhere. Very disappointing, my old car had an inexpensive portable unit with the aftermarket antenna under the dash and it worked like a champ

I have heard from several folks that XM is the better way to go, for some technical voodoo reasons, but I don't believe that's an option if you want to keep your car OEM.

Like i said cant tell you why but no voodoo involved there is a solid technical reason why XM works better than Sirius. So why are they pushing Sirius. We keep asking the same thing
