My ED Report - 11/8 to 11/25

17 days and 1500 miles

Summary of our trip:
• 11/8 to 11/9 Munich
• 11/9 to 11/10 Zurich/Bern
• 11/10 to 11/12 Geneva
• 11/12 to 11/21 Paris
• 11/21 to 11/25 Luxembourg / Siegen / Köln / Nurburgring / Frankfurt

We left Los Angeles on Wednesday11/7 and flew to Munich non-stop on Lufthansa (2-4-1). It was a very pleasant flight with nice stewardesses on board. We Arrived in Munich at around 1 pm on Thursday 11/8 and took the Lufthansa shuttle to Munich North. After getting off the shuttle and walking for about 5 min we arrived at our hotel, Munich Marriott North.

We stayed at Munich Marriott for one night and the next morning we left for Welt at 8 am. It was a truly amazing experience and it actually exceeded my expectations! The staff were very nice and professional. After checking in our luggage they took us to the 3rd floor to go over the initial paperwork. Then we were escorted to the VIP room and were told that somebody will meet us there and take us for a tour. The time was almost 8:30 am and the scheduled delivery time was 10 am. I knew we needed 45 minutes for the tour and another 45 min for the orientation, so I wasn’t sure how it is going to turn out.

After waiting for about 15 min and having a Cappuccino and a few snacks a lady showed up and took us on a tour. The tour took 45 min and we saw almost everything in the facility. Our tour guide was very professional and spoke very good English. By the time the tour was over it was 9:40 and we only had about 20 minutes to the delivery time. When we reminded this to our tour guide she was a little surprised and went to get someone to take us for the orientation. It seemed to me that they had forgotten about this step. So they gave us a quick 15 min orientation and at about 10:15 the big moment came.

The way the present the car to you is very nice. You first see the car from the stairs going down and as you go down the stairs you get closer to the car. You somehow want to enjoy every moment of this descent!

We were shown the features of the car and signed the final paperwork and off we go! We drove down the ramp, parked the car (valet) and went inside again to hang out a little more, take the factory tour and have lunch. I went on the factory tour by myself without my wife which I think was the right decision! The tour takes 2 ½ hours and is really interesting as you see almost the whole process of assembling a car using the latest technology. Also it helps you appreciate the fact that how much detail and craftsmanship is involved in a BMW car and makes you enjoy owning and driving it even more.

By the time we left Welt it was around 2 pm. We first went to Munich city center for a quick drive around town and then we left for Zurich.

The first time you drive on the Autobahn is pretty exciting and it gets a while to figure out where there is a speed limit and where there isn’t. We arrived in Zurich after driving for a few hours on the Autobahn and some side roads and taking a Ferry! The next morning we left for Geneva. It was raining and snowing which wasn’t too comfortable when you have summer tires on. We drove through the Swiss countryside from Zurich to Bern and stopped for an hour in Bern and took the freeway to Geneva.

We stayed 2 nights in Geneva and on Monday 11/12 we left for France. For the first part of the journey we took the mountain roads through Alps. The road and the scenery were fantastic although we had to drive on some snowy roads at the higher elevations which at times was a little scary!

In Paris we re-united with family and some friends. Our stay that week coincided with the train/bus drivers strike in France and having a car in Paris helped us tremendously to get around!

After spending a week we left Paris for Germany on 11/21. We drove through Reims and Luxembourg to go to a small town near Köln in Germany called Siegen. I had to drop off the car the next day in Frankfurt. Since my wife was not with me on this last part of my trip I was free to test the car capabilities on the Autobahn as much as I could and the traffic allowed. I would say driving on the Autobahn was the highlight of my trip.

Before dropping off the car I visited Nürburgring hoping to drive a few laps on the Nordschleife. This did not happen as the track was closed for some reason which I couldn’t figure out. I had no clue what it was written on the monitor at the track entrance. But just being so close to the ring and seeing the track is quite an experience. I also visited the motorsport museum at the track which is pretty interesting if you’re a fan.

Finally I dropped of the car in Frankfurt at Harms office later that day. We stayed a few more days in Germany to see more friends and flew back to LA on a non stop Lufthansa flight on 11/25.

This was a fantastic trip and an exciting experience (1st time ED’er). It was definitely worth all the time one puts in for planning and the ONLY WAY to purchase a new BMW. Can’t wait for the next one!

Here are some pics from Welt. More pics to come...

fabulous! I'm living vicariously through these stories since I'm on the edge of "should I, or shouldn't I..." (will 2008 be the ED year for me?)

Which area do you wish you had stayed in longer, which "leg" of your driving trip was the prettiest? How long did each driving leg take, anyway?

I wish I had stayed one more day in Munich. Also we just stayed one night in Zurich and couldn't see much of the city. If you want to see anything in any city you have to stay there for at least two nights.

Driving through the Alps was definitely the prettiest leg. I'm sure many of the fellow ED'ers would agree with me on this. We would start our journey early morning (to make the best of the daylight) and drive til 9-10 pm. But we would stop at a few places along the way.

Look at post #6... Someday I fear someone is going to crash in their summer tires and there might be legal ramifications to the ED program... (i.e. they would stop allowing delivery of summer tire equipped cars for 6 months a year, that would be a pain)

Hmmm, look at this pic.

I wouldn't want to drive here with summer tires.

Mr. JSpira et al,
In response to your not very nice words, I have to say the snow you see in that picture is on the side of the road on a driveway and the car is parked (you can see the road in the background with no snow on it). I had to drive on some slush on the road for a few hundred feet though (which I hadn't planned for and caught me by surprise) but this is not such a big deal when going 15 mi/hr on empty roads and with all the electronic stability systems that are installed on BMW cars.
IMO, this is a lot less dangerous that driving 130-140 mi/hr on the Autobahn when wet on cold days in winter which I think a lot of ED'ers do on a regular basis.

My words were not meant for you but rather spoke to the concept of driving in snow on summer tires. I am sorry if it came across otherwise. It was not my intent to be unkind to you.
