Front Strutbrace

I assume the front strutbrace is the metal piece that goes over the top of the engine bay. What is the purpose of this piece and what should I expect to pay if I go through BMW dealer?

Reduces body flex.

It is up for debate whether it does anything for normal driving. I believe Steve Dinan claims it doesn't do anything. I think it probably does something when the car is driving full out, but I think most of the rigidity gains in regular driving are not likely to be of any significant benefit.

I could be wrong though... some people swear they can feel the difference.

I think they usually run between 200-400 + labor if you want one.

E46 chassis is rigid enough to not need one unless you are going to the track.

On some Chassis's (older) that aren't as tight, the strutbrace will make a difference.

Consider it ornamentation.

Bling bling only if you had a clear hood to go with it.

I have an RD front strut bar in my car and the difference is very noticeable, esp. at the autoX and on the track. In addition to better handling, you also get more feedback through the steering wheel and less understeer. You don't need to pay for labor - it's a bolt-on.

At Bimmerfest today I noticed that the Dinan braces have pin joints; others don't. Does anyone know the reason for this? Is this "sissor mode" picked up by the suspension and would otherwise induce other problems?

Matt

Love mine... The car doesn't push the way it used to. It pushes badly now, not horrifically, like before.

Any 3-point strut brace would do the job. Weld-ons like the ones in the M3 are better of course. The only difference between Dinan's front strut brace and RD's or even Bavarian Motosport's is that Dinan's has carbon fiber cutouts on both sides which may reduce total weight by a pound or so but they are mostly designed to wow people looking under the hood. Not worth $500 IMO. Not even close...

Forgot to mention - type up 'Racing Dynamics Front Stressbar' in the Search box.

Cool. Did you get that at the dealer? Is it M3-specific?

I believe it will fit all E46's. I think there was a thread here a long time ago disussing whether or not it works.

I bought it from a fellow poster here
