Instument cluster sport mode indicator

Can someone with an automatic transmission non M-Z3 with front fog lights respond if their is an instrument cluster indicator when the tranny is in sport mode?
In my '01 M coupe there is a sport mode indicator where the normal front fog indicator is on the non M-Z3's. When I posted this, someone said that it was for the automatic transmission sport mode. Made sense at the time.
My guess is that the transmission in sport mode does not light an instrument cluster indicator since this place is already taken by the front fogs.
My coupe has neither front fogs or an automatic.
My guess, again, is that this is for the throttle related sport mode in the S54 M-Z3's.
If the case, I'm curious what switch (and its location) they planned on using.

If I recall correctly, there is no "sport" mode. The comparable feature is Steptronic. The indicator for that is on the information center underneath the speedometer.

The M sport instrument cluster indicator is in the same spot as the non M front fog instrument cluster indicator.

wait a minute!! does this mean....

ron--

am i reading between the lines? is there a sport mode that is possibly accessible on our S54s that might be activated by modulating a -12v signal to our ECUs?????

is there a "sport" mode on the M3s (non-SMG manual or automatic) that can make things more aggressive??

i am in vacation in miami, and my sister's Z4 has a sport mode button (its a 2.5)... ps by the way ron, would you like any pics of anything in particular on that car (for future planning??)? i would be more than happy to comply!

thanks

ps interesting post at other board:

same discussion on another forum....

I thought that the Z3's with automatic transmissions had a transmission sport mode.
If so, when a Z3 with an automatic transmission places the transmission in sport mode, does it light an instrument cluster icon?

Maybe a clue?

I got on the Owner's Circle and downloaded the Z3 3.0i manual for 2001. Ron's car is a 2001 I believe (just in front of mine from County Line). Not that the manual is absolutely authoritative, but the stuff here jibes with what I saw on a Z3 3.0i auto I drove frequently.

In this pic, we have the instrument cluster showing the foglight indicator on the lower left.

Another page of the manual

In this pic, we have a description of Item 13 from the instrument cluster illustration. As you can see, Item 13 points to indicators and warnings for front fog lamps and engine electronics. BTW, the engine electronics on page 22 have no reference to sport mode-- just your standard EML light, etc.

Z3 Sport mode

Finally, I've attached a picture from the Z3 3.0i manual page that references Sport Program. The indicator shows up on the gear indicator along with the odometer. S1 - S5 indicates Sport/Steptronic.

In an X5, when the shift lever is moved towards the driver (lhd), an indicator changes from D to S. Once you manually downshift/upshift, the S changes to a Numeral (1-5 depending).

Never having driven one, I would guess that the Z3/auto works along those same lines.

On a 2000 Z3 (non M) with an automatic transmission, the tranny is in "normal" mode when the gearshift lever is in "D" and the Automatic/Manual switch is in "A."

It is in "Sport" mode with the gearshift in "3" and the switch in "A." This has the effect of locking out overdrive, changing the shift points, and allowing engine braking to occur. There is NO indicator light on the dash.

The AT is in "Manual" mode when the Automatic/Manual switch is in "M." Then you move the gearshift to either 1, 2, 3, or D to pick and hold a gear. Again, there's no dashboard indicator when in manual mode either.

Yes, the Z3 steptronic one does.
Looks like the instrument cluster sport light in the S54 M-Z3's was for sport mode (throttle) that BMW chose not to enable.

Max,
Have you got the ETM (electrical troubleshooting manual)?
That's where you'll find real in depth info on the wiring, location of connectors and all.
