Havelcek,

What is the build date of your X3?

Thanks.

There must be a lot in common with the 3 and the X because we have had the same complaints about the transmission in our 07 328XI (lag, delay, hard down shifts,) as you all describe in your 07 and 08 X3's.
I did a search on the 3 series section and didn't find much but there is plenty of info here.

BMW tells us that it is programed to start out in second gear to save fuel and that this is normal operation? I'm thinking we need to say we don't accept this and we want it fixed now? Has anyone else heard of this problem in a 3 series car? I'm going to post this over at the 3 forum as well. Thanks!

The gearbox is programmed to start in 2nd if it is a short stop, i.e for a stop sign. If you've waited at a stop light, it should start in 1st gear. This isn't anything new; older BMWs did this as well.

Seems to me like it does it all the time but I will pay more attention at a stoplight to see if it does it there. It also has a huge lag when you step on it to pass. It takes it about 2 seconds to finally shift down. We also get some hunting between 30 and 45 mph on level driving. It's her car but I will drive it a little more to get a better feel of what it is doing. Thanks for the reply!

The problem with "lag, delay, hard down shifts" is not related to starting out in 2nd gear. I have driven different 3 series and X3's and they all start out in 2nd gear in the D mode. Not only should it save gas, it should give you a little more comfort by saving a gear change. It's completely normal. At the same time, having lag and delay is NOT acceptable.

By the way, interesting to note that your 328xi has the "same complaints"...

E90
323i 2006 GA6HP19Z or GA6L45R
323i 2007 GA6L45R
325i & 325xi 2004-2006 GA6HP19Z
328i & 328xi 2006-2007 GA6L45R
330i & 330xi 2004-2006 GA6HP19Z
335i & 335xi 2006-2007 GA6HP19Z

I think 323i not available in US?

We have this car at the dealership 3 times with these complaints and keep being told that can't replicate and it it operating "normal". So I did a search and end up here with the x3's. most of the descriptions here are exactly what we have been saying to the dealership. one can't help but wonder?

AzNMpower32, once again stick to what you really know. What should happen and what does happen are two different things. If you wait at a stop light slap it over to SD and you will see it does not start off in 1'st gear , but 2'nd unless you force it down to 1'st. The 5 speed may have done this but the 6 speed AT definitely does not revert to 1'st gear.

My 2007 X3 starts in 1st gear in D mode. I've confirmed it numerous times by counting the gears. If I use Manual mode, it starts in 2nd. I don't use SD mode because it FVCK1NG SVCK$!

How can you tell? When you have a BMW 6 speed automatic transmission that is a mess and your dealer keeps telling you "no problems", "cannot duplicate" and "it's the characteristics", you have a GA6L45R GM transmission!

I think this GA6L45R is so much of a problem that's why even Vatkens' too scare to touch this subject. I have driven a 323i (07) loaner and I can swear it has the same GA6L45R because it has pretty well the same "characteristics". Too bad the dealers can't hide so they have to play along with this approach.

Ashes, I found a March 07 CNET review of the 328XI and this is what they say about the AT:

Quote:
CNET:
Acceleration in the standard drive mode feels sedate, but greatly improves in the sport mode. We found the accelerator was difficult to get used to, and we could never really tell when we were going to get power. Sometimes there would be lag and sometimes not. Regular drive mode produced acceleration lag, while sport mode minimized it. But even in sport mode we sometimes got odd lags while cornering. We could never quite pin down how to use this accelerator to get consistent performance.
Link: http://reviews.cnet.com/sedan/2007-b...-32329714.html

So, I think your 328XI most likely "normal".

2008 X3

Not sure if we just were lucky or there has been another "fix", but my wife and I picked up her new X3 in Munich on May 8th and spent 10 days driving in conditions from the Autobahn to the high passes in the Dolomites and the backroads of Tuscany. While I tried to talk her into a manual due to all of the reported problems she insisted on the auto and all I can say is wow. It performed flawlessly in all conditions and drove like a dream. Having the Sport package on the twisty mountain passes and winding through Tuscany was a real bonus and neither of us thought the ride was too harsh even when the roads were less then perfect. We ended up putting over 1,000 miles on during the trip with two long days on the road transiting from Germany to Northern Italy and back up to Munich for the dropoff. We had one transit on the A22 where we hit 115 mph for a prolonged period and it was smooth as silk.
In short, no regrets with the X3 up to this point, but will withhold final judgement until we take redelivery and have the chance for day to day driving in American traffic.

October 2007...it was delivered the day after last Thanksgiving. When I took it into the dealer I was told I had the most recent software and was sent on my way with a pat on the head. Silly consumers.

Burt, congrats on your new ride! Thanks for your writeup and maybe you can share some pictures with us too . Apparently, I think BMW do listens and I hope they will make good on those who are having problems in a hurry.

almost got in an accident

Well, I had the major update last year, which actually seemed pretty good. Not perfect, but maybe I could live with it-I thought.

Hesitation was practically all gone. Lately it has gotten worse again.

Almost got clocked while making left turn into gas station today. I had plenty of room to make left turn, but it lunged forward slightly, then nothing!!!!! Then the oncoming traffic was approaching, and beeping their horn. All of a sudden, I got power, and the tires chirpped!

it is weird-you push the gas down, and it does not respond.

Not safe!

I am not happy. I bought it April of 2007. It has been in for this problem at least 5 times.
It is going in again-this time for good!

I want a new vehicle-this is a lemon!

I just found this site and it's remarkable how well many describe my '07 x3. My second week of ownership, it quit and was in the shop 9 days. Something with a computer having to be re-programmed and the engineers were all out on holiday. Then the hesitation and down shifting started. It's been re-programmed twice. A lens cover on the driver side had to be replaced and the sun roof rattles so loud, I just close the shade so it's not so annoying. It was supposed to be fixed during the last 8 day trip to the shop for re-programming.I hate to be so pessimistic, but I don't see any change in the downshifting when stopping. I' m sure the hesitation will happen again also. My dealership has been responsive but it's not fixed yet either. My first bmw and I'm so dissappointed!

And what exactly will they say when they are in touch with you soon?

There are no new fixes, at least none that any of us (or my dealer for that matter) know about.

Is there a secret fix for certain people who complain in a forum?

I have the exact same problem and have been living with it for a year and half(with all the currently available fixes, of course). Is there a new fix?

Well, it happened to me today and only 10 days out of the shop and the latest fix. What happened today was really weird! Not just the usual hesitation that scares the bejesus out of you because you don't move. Today, when I pressed down on the accelerator, the engine raced, the tach rose and it just sat there. Those of you out there, who know what happened, explain please. I'm a female and not as knowledegeable as most of you.

Smile A new angle to the problem

Hey everyone,

I've been the owner of an '07 X3 since April last year (built in March) and can say that I share many of your experiences. At first I thought it was just me but after spending some time on the forum I realized I was not alone.
I hesitated taking the car into the shop just for the software update so waited until my first scheduled maintenance. So last week at a little over 17,000 miles the car got serviced. I explained the whole transmission problem to the technician and we test drove the car together. He claimed that it wasn't realy a transmission problem but rather a throttle problem. (Mind you before driving the car he claimed BMW had not recorded such problems.)
He said he had a fix for it so I waited eagerly for my car to return.
After 1 week driving I must admit that it has improved tremendously.

According to the invoice, I received the following updates:
SIB 121707 DME update for poor throttle response
SIB 240807 EGS Update for harsh downshifts

The car behaves totally different. It's always ready to go either from a standstill or accelerating after braking / slowing down. I'm now a very happy owner of an awesome performing X3.
