i agree. they should fix it and they probably will............but chances are the dealer (if they follow protocol) will slap several band aids on it before they go into surgery and operate. personally, my time (and absence of headaches), is much more important than any amount loss from depreciation.

i got the update about 3-4 weeks ago and the car is driving great. that said, i've only put like 300 miles on it in the last month. i think i may have received a different software update than most others on the board but im not sure. the dealer had to get some code from PUMA to fix the problem. here is what our very own BMW_tech explains when PUMA gets involved.

"PuMA is the new age technical assistance once all resources has been exhausted. A PuMA case gets created when the problem is beyond the tech and shop foreman's reach. A way for BMW to gather data and use as a tool to create a database for development/research/updates/repairs and also plays a big part on S.I.B.'s and it's updates. The Urban Program update requires a few digits (I once joked that these might be geographical codes and if you're in New Jersey you're basically SOL) in order to perform and complete this "retrofit". It's exactly what it sounds like, it's a program designed while following a taxi cab. PuMA cases are also sent for approval of part replacements, to gather data and to eliminate electrical misdiagnosis"

I get the same stupid response from my SA. In my opinion, BMW's service level is no better than Ford or Chevy, if not worse. It is definitely not at the level of other luxury car dealers. It's a shame because I like their cars but I kinda doubt I'd get another BMW the next time.

Thanks to whomever started this thread. I thought I was alone out there with this problem as dealership is "lost" on finding out what is happening. Will let you know what happens in my case.

Diz - do you normally drive the car with the AC on? We had a few 80 degree days here about a week ago, and I noticed that I couldnt get the car to clunk with the AC on (AC temp was set at 60 I think). As soon as I turned the AC off, I heard the damn clunk.

next time I visit the service joint, I'm gonna try to get the Urban Program installed.

Slipping out of Park

I have had a slightly different issue. While parked, the transmission has slipped into neutral. The first occasion the car was parked for the night in our driveway and rolled into my father- in -law's car . The second occasion I was sitting in it in Park with the accessories on (was on the phone) and watched move into Neutral. The car is still at my dealer while they try to troublesoot the problem. Anyone else have a similiar experience??

OK, the bad news is I have been without my 06 750li for a few weeks. The good news is the local dealership seems to have solved my "slipping and slamming" problem.

Last year they kind of blew me off but then, thanks to this forum, I convinced them they needed to take the problem seriously as it was clear this was a documented flaw in the car and that further inaction on their part was going to result in legal action.

So, the took the car (gave me nice X5 as a loaner) and over the last two weeks replaced the main engine computer (brand new one from Germany, not rebuilt [they tried that and it did not solve the problem) as well as several sensors on the transmission. If anyone needs it, I can email you the documenation on exactly what was done.

Got it back a week ago and man, what a difference! Not only is the "slipping and slamming" problem gone when in sport mode but the car overall is a lot quicker and responsive. Feels like a completely different car!

Anyway, hats off to the folks at Classic BMW. They got it right this time.

Hope this helps someone else out.

Regards,

Nick

So they replaced the engine control module and that fixed the trans problem?

In addition to an occasional tap from the transmission when stopping at a light, I have also occasionally been experiencing a "slipping/vibe" from the torque converter when I first engage DRIVE on the car every few starts. Anyone else experienced this?

Dunno if anyone reads BIMMER magazine, but this months has an article on the old BIG Bimmers (7 Series, 8 Series and 6 Series) and they routinely slam the E65 as the worst car BMW has ever built. In fact, in one part of the article they say a 120k mile E65 will need half the car replaced, while a 120k mile E32 7 will be in perfect shape if dealer maintained. In another part of the article they go on to say that "until the E65 came along, the E32 740i was the worst car in BMWs history".
