If you're looking for a truly reliable car buy another Lexus... If you want a classy car with character, german driving dynamics and style... buy a BMW.

A Mercedes won't get you either one.

In addition to an occasional tap from the transmission when stopping at a light, I have also occasionally been experiencing a "slipping/vibe" from the torque converter when I first engage DRIVE on the car every few starts. Anyone else experienced this?

Dunno if anyone reads BIMMER magazine, but this months has an article on the old BIG Bimmers (7 Series, 8 Series and 6 Series) and they routinely slam the E65 as the worst car BMW has ever built. In fact, in one part of the article they say a 120k mile E65 will need half the car replaced, while a 120k mile E32 7 will be in perfect shape if dealer maintained. In another part of the article they go on to say that "until the E65 came along, the E32 740i was the worst car in BMWs history".
I remember reading this and they also said 7 series s a mechanic's treasure .
I've been a Bimmer magazine subscriber for the past 3 years and I love reading it and the market update you get alot of knowledge and reviews from Mike Miller and other readers , I was surprised when i saw my name in the Q&A section about the transmission slamming when i first bought my car , he mentioned they Guibo and the SIB about the 2nd to 1st. I just received the issue with the X6 about to find out what's it all about. I'm glad i found some body else reads it comparing to European car magazine , I never liked it .

I've had my share of bimmers over the years and as much as I dont wanna admit it, I agree with Bimmer magazine. I'm on my second E66 (first one was a buyback) and I think its not only the worst bimmer I've had, but the worst car I've had. I've had so much **** replaced on the car thats it downright pathetic (this is before I hit 40k miles). When everything works (prob once a month), there is no other car like it. I was considering MY06+ for a while but realized its pretty much the same sad story.

Hopefully, the new 7 series will be a lot more improved.

Dunno if anyone has dug this up before, but here is a detailed article on the 6HP26 transmission in the E65/6.

http://www.7-forum.com/modelle/e65/z...sion_6hp26.php

Here's an interesting part of the article that may provide some explanation relating to the clunk when downshifting to a stop in specfic:

A further new feature for automatic transmissions is made possible by the 6HP26's electronic control system; the "Stand-by-Control" (SBC). The electronics control the input clutch in the transmission such that the engine is disconnected from the driveline when the vehicle is stationary, even when in gear.

In other words, the engine is COMPLETELY disengaged from the trans when you come to a stop in this car, much like a traditional manual transmission clutch. All of this is supposed to happen without you noticing, apparently it doesn't...

Maybe the sbc or whatever it is is the reson why we all get that hesitation and jumpy feeling when we put it in drive or from a stop light? Maybe that module could be replaced and it would be smoothe? Good article playdriveforme.

damn, I finally had the 1st gear slam today going to work. The incline to the parking lot is pretty steep and I had the car in sport mode, pulled up to the incline and gave it some gas and BAM, felt like a truck had rear ended me.

time for another service appointment

I haven't noticed any transmission issues on my 7 but after seeing how many people have had theirs replaced it kinda scares me. Any know if the Easy Care Total Care Warranty covers this?

even the most basic warranty should cover transmission. however, the dealer almost always pushes the software update prior to replacing the tranny and software updates usually aren't covered by aftermarket warranties.

I just had the transmission issue happen to me today. I was slowing to a stop on a small incline when the light turned green. I was approaching an on ramp when I started to accelerate. I thought I had been hit, pulled of the the side of the road and checked it out. I decided to drop it off to the dealership on the way home. The SA said that there is a new software update that he can install that works. I guess I was lucky in my first 11 months of ownership, now the fun begins. I am glad I leased this car. This is on on 07 with 28,000 miles.

Exactly, this is a very similar issue to the Lexus RX300 that I wouldve put 2 trannies (trade in b4 second done). They do this type of maneuver to save gas and be "smoother" but if the computer f's it up (usually does as it assumes your gonna come to a complete stop, but if the light changes you go again) you start in the wrong gear, it then tries to compensate and switches the gear "hot" w/o clutches or whatever (not a mechanic just reciting info I was informed). This is supposed to be bad for the tranny and makes it run hot and burn clutches, therefore getting shorter lifetimes for them. If you think about it, thats why it makes sense for them to create an "URBAN" program for the trannies.

Just my .02

Just called the dealership to check on the status of my car. The SA told me that I already have the most current update on my car (build date 2/07). He has put the case into "puma" to see what BMW wants to do with it. They said they cannot duplicate the problem. As for me I went to the chiropractor today. Have some whip lash from the jolt (it was a really hard jolt) and I can't turn my neck to the left. Any hope for a replacement transmission (will a new one fix the problem, or is it the same thing that I already have)? He said to check in with them on Monday night. I get to keep the little loaner car for the weekend (I do have some respect for the 335 now, its way to small, but very quick).

lol, did not mention it to him. I was pretty soar this morning. Whip lash was probably an extreme term, but it felt the same as when I was in an accident years ago and got hit by a car going about 40 miles per hour.

Unfortunately I've come to the conclusion this is pretty much a ZF problem across the board with their six speeds. I drove an '06 E350 right off the MB lot yesterday that was every bit as sloppy if not more-so than the 745 is after the software update.

Alright guys the much awaited"DME control module"thats apparently causing all this problem has finally arrived.I am going to get mine to the dealership tommrrow.Hopefully BMW has "cured"the problem....oh btw I noticed a another new problem....when I start the car in the am,the idle is so erratic like it almost kills the engine(like a flooded carburettor)
I took a video clip of this to show my tech,he said that BMW says that the new DME is to correct"all the problems we are having with the 7"Any of you have this issue?
I wanted to sell my 7 because of all this BS.....guess what I paid $100k for a fully loaded 07 750li and the trade in is only 52k......sucks doesnt it

What BMW center do you take it to?

When you put so much money into depreciating entities(M6,750LI,545I, Z4M), why are only worried about 7's depreciation? Just curious.

The 750li is the only one that I would be taking a hit on real bad.....BMW themselves say that the e65 has the worst resale in their model line up ......as for my e46m3,z4m and the m6.....they are keepers,so the thought of selling them or loosing money on them has not crossed my mind
I actually sold my 545 for the 7......big mistake but if all goes on well tommrrow at the dealership with the DME swap and it drives well without any issues Im having now with it,I will definitely keep it....dont wna loose 50k in a year on this one....just a fkn waste
btw I sold my 04 545 with 40k miles for $40k.......its just the way I keep my cars and people here know me for how I maintain my rides

Can you please find out if this fix also applies to an 745s? I have an 04 with the same problem - if you have a part number, that would be great

I have a feeling this fix is for the newer 7s (MY 06+).

Good Luck.

I got a call from my SA today, and he said there is nothing wrong with the car. I went over the posts here with him, and was told that "those are only problems with 02-05 models". He offered me a test drive with the shop foreman, but without a duplication of the problem with him in the car, no repair will be made. Any suggestions for the test drive? From what I have read, put it in sport mode and look for a small incline. Any other ways to get this problem to show up?
