2008 X5 3.0 - is the power adequate?

Hi all:

I am coming over from the e60 threads and I have a question to all of you that have X5 3.0 (2008 or 2007) model.

Do you feel the power is adequate on a day to day basis?

I have a 2005 X5 3.0 that I am returing soon, possibly with a deal on a 535xi tomorrow and I am torn between the X5 3.0 and the 535xi. The space is somewhat beneficial for me, but not everything.

Just want some opinions that are out there.

Thanks !

in a test drive i felt the 4.8 was more in tune with the design and driving dynamics of the X5 vs the 3.0.

versus a 5 series i don't know. remember the X weighs in excess of 6000 lbs.

There have been many discussions here about that and the 4.8 people would never move "down" to a 3.0. 'Stang has a point. I only know my 3.0 and with 4000 miles I find it suits my needs just fine. I do have the sport package. If you test drive a 3.0 put the transmission into sport drive, it does pick it up.

I think it is too different in style and power to compare it to a 535Xi so I would imagine if you don't need the room and don't care about the SUV feel and up high ride the 535 would be the hands down choice..

I feel the 3.0 in the X5 is adequate, even at altitude here in Colorado. It won't even remotely compare to a 535 however so they are completely different animals. If you need the cargo space, then buy the X5.

Chan, the diesel X5 should be available here soon. If you can wait for that you might have the best of both worlds, great performance and super fuel economy. There was also a hint that the twin turbo I6 would be offered at some point to further distance the X5 from the X3 which now has the same 3.0is powerplant, but of course less weight to haul. I need a 7 seater next but will not consider "I Drive" so will have to move elsewhere, probably to a XC90 V8 Sport. Good luck in your quest!

Smile Why not also consider the 535xi SW?

Why not also look at the touring station wagon version of the 535xi? I did a ED of a new 2008 model last May and the engine is amazing - and you have most of the cargo space of the X5. I have a 2001 X5 3.0i also but I greatly prefer to drive the 535xit - 300hp + turbo makes all the difference.

i continually try to convince my wife to test drive a sport wagon but as yet she will not bite. but then again it was an uphill battle to get her into a 330i. maybe soon.

I highly doubt the diesel will offer more performance, with that being said even if it does it won't be as fun as the 3.0si. People who enjoy power and such don't look to diesels for 'fun'.

I prefer wagons over SUV's so I'm biased, but I cannot imagine the engine in my Z4 (which isn't a rocket by many standards) lugging around another ton of weight.

Storage wise the 535xi wagon is only a few cubic feet off from the X5.

I suggest getting the wagon.

I test drove the 3.0i and the 4.8i and found also that the 3.0i would be quite sufficient for the everyday driving. I also agree that the X5 was designed for the 4.8i first. I opted for the 4.8i because I want to tow stuff and I felt that the extra power would be beneficial.

I do not regret at all my choice. You do suffer a hit at the pump however with the 4.8i.

Cheers.

My last visit to the pump costed me nearly 80 bucks with the sudden increase in gas price (3.6* for Shell's V-Power? )

We have had our 08 X5 3.0si for about three weeks and I find the power to be fine. We previously have a Honda Pilot and the reported 0-60 times are about the same and I have not noted any difference between the two. In fact, the X5 seems a bit peppier, but that may be related to the better torque curve in the BMW straight six compared to the Honda V6. We have no regrets in not selecting the 4.8i, the 3.0 is bad enough at the pump (abut the same in the city as the Pilot, but slightly better in highway driving).

Adequate or not, it depends. Just like someone said 528 is powerful enough, while others said 550 is not even enough.

If you care more about performance, 535xi is definitely a much much better choice. 80 lbft more torque, 1000 lb less weight. X5 3.0 is not even close.

If space is important, well, is the old X5 3.0 (225hp/215lbft) powerful enough to you? If yes, then the new X5 3.0si is probably a better choice. If you want both space and performance, then go for an X5 4.8 or wait for 2009 X5 xDrive35 (the saem engine as that in 535).

Is the X5 35 gonna be in the middle of the 3.0 and the 4.8 in terms of power/torque/both?

Yes, see the number below:

X5 3.0si: 255hp, 220lbft
X5 3.5: 300hp, 300lbft
X5 4.8: 350hp, 360lbft

X6 is coming with 3.0L TT (300hp, 300lbft) and 4.4L TT (400hp, 450lbft). It'll be a big surprise if NOT seeing X5 coming with the same engines.

damn I want that 400 hp, 450lbft. How many percent would a new X5 depreciate over a few months and 1-2k mileage?
