E39 Radio : NO Sound ...

Hello everyone,

The Radio in my '00 528i is not issuing any sound. The repair guy told me its from the Cassette Module, so I changed it and still the problem is there...
The Amplifier is not located in the back left hand subcompartment as usual, I was informed that it is integrated within the Cassette module itself () which is really strange...
Am now stuck with no sound ! and cant find the solution for it ....
Can anyone help please ? thank you

Check/re-seat the fuses for the radio. Its the easiest, cheapest place to start troubleshooting.

56, 58, and 43. IIRC 43 is in the glove compartment, the other two in the trunk. Neither of mine were fried when i had a similar situation, but i did pull em, and re-seat them after a couple mins, and everything was fine.

I had a similar problem whereby the sound system had developed a whistle proportional to the volume, but approx 10 times louder than the actual radio/CD/TV sound that you could just hear(this lasted whilst driving also).Later this developed into total loss of my display screen incl Sat Nav.Then I found the car wouldnt start,I checked the battery voltage which was only 8.5 Volts.I am at present charging the battery. The fault looks like I have a short somewhere.I am about to get a BMW interrogator check done. Can anyone help finger where the fault may be please.I will keep you informed on my progress

my speakers didnt work on left or the back of the car so now i only have the speakers in the drivers door working. i had a tech guy look at it but he kept trying to say it was my radio but i know its not because i tried changing the radio. i have no amp in the boot like the guy from dubai. so eventually the guy realised that there is a break in my speaker cables. they are broken somewhere which is pretty strange but it IS THE PROBLEM. so i need to run new speaker cable to the speakers that arent working, which im not looking forward to!
sounds like you guys are having same problem. if the speakers are fine, the stereo is fine.... must be the cable running to the speakers.....

my thread relating to my speakers...

the amp is in the trunk by the cd changer on the other side of the fuse case in your trunk.

Did any of you figure out the problem of no sound?
I just got the same problem.
HU is on, I can change the radio stations. CD is playing and able to control from the HU and the steering wheel.
But no sound at all. Not on one speaker.
I tried the resit the fuse.
No luck.

I asked the same question.

Can you check if your aribag light comes on during initial start-up? A long shot, but mine doesn't (scanner reveals no comm. w/ the airbag module. And I also have no sound but radio displays work fine, tuner finds stations, etc.

I suspect the output from the radio to your driver side speaker is dead.
The amp for sure is good since you can play CD.

I think my problem is the amp Fu*k up.

i posted this in another thread with a similar name...

anyways, i have a 99 540 and out of the blue today my radio stopped emitting sound. The display would light up and function fine, but it was like it was on mute. I had been cleaning up the interior earlier in the day and screwed around with the phone (i never use it, and it's always unplugged). Anyways, i plugged the phone back up and it made a loud beep thru the speakers. Then i turned on the stereo and there was sound again. I unplugged the phone, and since then the stereo has been working with no problems...

I have the same problem with my BMW, the screen is on the CD player works all the display options on the screen work but no matter what I do there is no sound. Have switched the car off and back on the sound sometimes comes on but then would go off again, everything else still working. Have checked fuses and the obvious, have been told that it could be the BM54 Radio Module. Haven't had a chance to get one yet but would like to know if anyone has tried replacing this and if this has solved the problem?

FYI - In my '03 530i the radio wouldn't play but CD worked fine. It turns out the CD player has the tuner section in it - go figure.

at the amp meter the purple white wire... see if you're getting 12v then you can take the brown yellow to the blue wires to ohm the speakers... these amps die but there are so many of them out there on craigslist and ebay that it shouldnt be a hard fix.

had a similar issue - am radio was dropping out, then gone, then the FM & CD player started dropping out, then gone. Replaced the radio module (in the trunk - C43 BM US) and all was well for about a week, then all started dropping out again, and were all gone again in a day or so.

At that point I remembered that I had been rear-ended in the drivers side a few months back, and the second dropouts occurred during the massive rainfall we had in CT two weeks ago. A little poking soon revealed about 1.5 inches of standing water under my spare tire.

Back to the body shop - a seal integrity test showed water was "pouring" in around the drivers side taillight, right over the radio module. They sealed it up, I got another module, and all is well so far.

Anyways - AM/FM radio, and CD player all route through the radio module. NAV sound does not (that's how I knew the amp and speakers were OK, NAV directions came through loud & clear).

FWIW

I was having the same problems as all of you. One day as i was coming back from vegas, my radio just turned off and my steering wheel went up! After truning off the car then tturning back on about 15 min later everything was normal. Well 2 weeks after that my radio wouldn't even power on! Just the time would show. Well long story short, my ignition switch was going bad! After researching and talking to a BMW tech, i went to bmw, spent $68 bucks for a new switch, installed it and problem solved!

Mein Auto: 911,930,951,M3,528IT,924,
Hello, I am new to this forum,( first post) and found my way here trying to find out why the radio on my 99 528 it did not work. I fixed mine, hope I can help some of you out.
I had the same symptoms as many above. My radio turned on , lit up, you could change stations, but just no sound. After checking all the fuses, and removing the radio/ cassete deck, and amp and referencing wiring diagrams and checking all of the power and grounds to these components, I was kind of figuring that it was the amp. We also have a 97 m3, so I yanked the amp out of it plugged it in to the 528, and , viola , Sound!!. I was happy. I had seen a couple of posts where they found a bad connection at the rear of the radio, but in those cases, it looks as if their unit did not even turn on, or light up.
Hope this is of some use to some of you out there. In my searching for information, I see that there are a whole bunch of people out there trying to fix this same problem, and I could not find a single case online where someone had successfully repaired it.
Best of luck!!!
