Is a 2001 M5 worth it?
I'm currently driving a 2003 530i (manual transmission) and I love it, but at 80k mi it's getting long in the tooth and I don't want to put money in it, so I'm looking. Found a 2001 M5, manual transmission, which I demand, with 23k mi for $27k. The car just came in to the dealer, which is checking it over for pre-owned certification.
Here's the question: Is it worth getting a low mileage 2001 M5 or am I better off getting a new model 5 series? Thanks. |

Well, I've had my beast for almost two years and it's truly like no other car. Having the same choice as you, I do not regret making mine.
But, I would be careful with the 01 that you found. The miles are very low and are somewhat suspicious. Do a full carfax check and also perform a full PPI. The car does not qualify for CPO status (it's too old), just food for thought.

Depends if you want to have fun...
That's short mileage & short money for a vehicle that's twice the car a 530 is.... - GO for it & don't look back. Quote:

which dealership?....cuz I doubt Chapman or North Scots dealers are willing to let one go for that little....those two(3) dealerships are awfully proud of their pre owneds...unless you have an inside source.....
If you don't buy it...I might if you tell me where and if it is the right color combo....good luck! |

I think he is referring to the one at BMW North Scottsdale.....not worth it....looks good but it has just been repainted because of a "small ding"....(rather poorly, gritty and eneven) and the trunk has had "some work"....and they are complete A holes to deal with....nuff said....

wow, that's a great price... but hopefully it wasn't sitting for years without proper maintenance.. or an accident case where no one bothered to fix it for a while, hence the low mileage

i understand that the m5 is a great car especially the e39 model i have a 528i e39 and i love it but you have to remember that it is going to be a 8yr old car and the maitnece is going to annoy you with new 528i or 535 you will not regret it

Hell yeah it's worth it. Or you might want to look for a 540 sport for around $20K which is a very similar car to the M5 for much less $$$ and less maintenance requirements.
and yes, there is quite a difference between a 530 and a 540. |

I'd say jump on it.But see if you can get a warranty with another company.Contact me for some names.I don't want to give them out because I'm fighting with one right now,so it could sway my opinnion.det42phx@yahoo.com

it cannot be certified because certified pre-owned is only 6yrs/100k miles, being that an 2001 the certified pre-owned warranty would expire in 2007

That's an insane deal.
I'm not sure how new you're talking but I'm shopping for an E39 M5 right now and the wife has her E60. Beyond obvious nostalgia, the car is just a whole 'nother animal. If you're like me and need to compare a few examples, I've already done a lot of the heavy lifting. I built a spreadsheet that has every E39 M5 (currently 100) for sale across the country under $20k. It includes prices, miles, ownership records and more. Definitely join up at M5 Board too. Tons of information.
