Oil pan gasket change?

The gasket between my oil pan and the engine is leaking on the driver's side of the engine and dripping little bits of oil onto my garage floor. From what I've read, replacement is not really a DIY kind of job and involves removing parts of the front suspension to drop the pan. Has anyone had their oil pan gasket replaced? If so, how much should I expect to pay?

I've changed the oil pan gasket on two E46's; however, not because they were leaking. If you've ever changed your lower control arms and bushings, you're likely up to the challenge.

Since the front subframe must be removed, the engine has to be supported from above. There is a special BMW fixture designed for this purpose, but it's very expensive definitely not a DIY item. I bought some box beam bar stock and made my own.

The E46 oil pan gasket is a fairly robust seal; a leaking seal is quite rare. Are you absolutely certain the base of the dip stick isn't leaking? That would be a $2.00 O-Ring and a relatively easy DIY.

Sorry, I don't know how much a shop would charge to replace an oil pan gasket, but $400+ would not surprise me at all perhaps $600 at the dealer.

I will remove some of the engine covers and airbox parts this weekend and really look for the source. All I can tell so far is that the leak is below and behind the intake manifold on the driver's side of the engine. Beyond that I can't see much else from a casual inspection. I'm hoping that it's just a simple o-ring, that would be perfect. The most difficult job I've done with this car is the valve cover gasket so I don't think I'd attempt to do this one myself.

Vstol,

I am planning to work on replacing my oil pan gasket. I have 2 sections on the oil pan that are leaking. I am familiar with the oil dip stick o-ring seals, and the leak is not coming from there.

This brace is what I am planning to use http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=96524. Is the engine support eyelet by the Vanos enough to hold the engine up without the subframe? Are there other support points I should consider?
