Disable Navigation/Radio Screen

Is there a simple way to disable the navigation display on a 2004 x3? I just don't it to keep having to pop up / down when i don't need it for day to day operation.

I did a simple forum search and didn't come up with anything quick, so I figure I'd bring the question here.

Any help would be appreciated..

If you press the button to close it before you turn off the key, it'll stay closed when you restart.

However, turning on the stereo or hitting the menu button will pop it open again.

Mein Auto: 2006 BMW X3 3.0i (manual)
I was wondering the same thing.

My 2006 X3 3.0i (manual, premium, sport, xenons) does not have Nav. But, I went for a test drive with a good friend of mine who's interested in a CPO X3 automatic. We drove one with Nav and it made me very glad I don't have it. He was driving, so I could focus on the Nav screen. Issues:

1) the way it automatically pops up when you don't actually want to use it. My maps in the door pocket don't do that
2) grainy, low-rez graphics (this was a 2005 model, so maybe it's gotten better since then)
3) no touch screen. It took me a while to find the knob/button that controls the Nav. I expected it to be touch screen. I guess that gets to how "dated" looking Nav systems can be even when the rest of the car still looks fresh. Computer just age much more rapidly than cars do. (~3 years vs. ~8 years or more)

This was the first time I got to play with a BMW nav system and I can say I'm still glad I don't have one. Just my $0.02 obviously. Everyone has different needs.

Its all getting use to.Do you think its fair making a judgement about the Nav after only being in the X3 for a short period of time ?. Sure it probably could use a up date, like so many others but I like mine and it gets me where I want to go. If you don't want the screen to pop up SHUT it off.
cheers

I was strongly opposed to paying $1600 for the nav option until I got it on an X3 I bought from stock. Maybe not the most up to date but it appears to me that BMW put a lot of thought into it and did more than just put a DVD RAM drive in the back and a screen in the dash. The screen is electrically tiltable for glare with the two buttons on the left, the map can be expanded to the full size of the screen, it's well integrated with the stereo and phone and I find inputting a destination with the knob is no slower than using my touch screen Navigon 5000. Maybe even faster. I find the graphics detailed enough and when I don't want to look at the screen I just turn it off. I hate the price but I'm not disappointed with the quality.
