1. Ponte Vecchio from Ponte Santa Trinita in black & white.
2. Ang in front of Ponte Vecchio. She's a little out of focus because I set the camera on the wrong focal point.
3. See right what had happened was. This is what happens when you have a long shutter and move before the shutter closes. I'm an ass.
4. I got it right in this pic. Me & Ang on Ponte Santa Trinita with Ponte Vecchio behind us. A little info about this pic. We were trying to take this pic on the bridge with a narrow sidewalk and cars whizzing by behind the camera. Can you say idiot move?
5. Me & Ang on Ponte Santa Trinita with Ponte Vecchio in background. Another one of my bright idea ways to get a picture. Trying to get a wider shot I put the camera and tripod on the opposite side of the bridge, then had to wait for traffic to stop to get back across street. Then we had people walking by near the camera that would stop to give use a chance to take the picture, but we had to time the shutter with traffic. Which explains the slight blur of a car in the lower left. That remote came in handy.
6. View from Westin Excelsior room to the left
7. View from Westin Excelsior room straight ahead
8. View from Westin Excelsior room to the right
9. Seriously I know how to act, but sometimes I can't help myself. Ang took with her camera.

Day 15

01 Novembre 2007 – Please insert disc; It’s holiday…thaaat’s riiight; It is going to fall
Up again at the butt crack of dawn, do the breakfast café thing again and off to the Monaco, via the designer outlets, a romp through Tuscany in search of Chianti and olive oil and Pisa. Not…quite. The nav disc Joern gave me seems to have problems reading the info on the disc that covers anything south of Deutschland. The disc freezes and gives an error. So there have been a few times we had to take out the disc and do the usual blow and wipe. Then there are times when we can’t get the disc out and will have to get out of the car, lock it, wait a minute, get back in and only then will we get the disc back.
So on this day before we get going it happens again and so we repeat the above. After driving a few blocks we realize that the message on the screen says “Please insert disc”. Huh? The disc is inserted. After pressing the eject button a few hundred times I decide we need to find a BMW dealer. We pull over to a gas station to ask for directions. After getting through the language barrier and a few hand gestures, off we go. Somehow we must have missed a turn because we end up at the same gas station on the opposite side. These guys had a good laugh as we pulled in. So we tried it again. This time we saw the sign for BMW dealer, but at the next fork in the road there were signs for Porsche, Alfa, and Mercedes, but no BMW. So I use my internal compass and figured that BMW had to be near these dealers.
While we are trying to find the dealer, my girlfriend is still trying to get the disc out. We see every automaker known to man, but no BMW and no one is open. It is after 0830, but every business seems to be closed on a Monday. I eventually see this small sign for BMW. It is back off the main drag in a little neighborhood. The dealer is also closed. I do not understand why everything is closed. Then it hits me, it is the first of Novembre and we are in Italía. YOU IDIOT…it is All Saints Day.
I park on the side of the road and continue to try to eject the disc. My girlfriend started using her Crackberry to find the outlet stores. After wasting at least a good two hours between trying to get directions, find the dealer and getting the disc out a little voice says hit the eject button for the CD player. Here you have two people with three degrees between us and neither one thought of hitting the CD button.
The outlets are less than an hour outside of Firenze. They do have all the major designer outlet stores here. Most of the merchandise is last season or the season that is ending. Don’t expect big savings here, but worth the trip.
I then charted a route for the Chiantigiana Route (actual route name) on Via Chiantigiana in search of Chianti and olive oil. The road is well signed and there are plenty of places to stop and buy. For the drivers among us there are great roads along this route. After driving for what seemed like forever we finally came upon a vineyard that was open. We purchased four bottles of Chianti and ten bottles of olive oil. They also had grappa, which is made from the skin of the grape and it is has a kick like a mule. We decided that this was not for us.
After finding our way out of Tuscany, we made it to Pisa in about 2.5 hours. Not much to do here but see the Duomo, Baptistry, and the Leaning Tower. The tower leans a lot farther than I thought. If it leans any farther it will become “the Felled Tower of Pisa”. After stopping for a quick bite, we were on our way to Monaco.
The drive to Monaco was around 4-5 hours. I fell in with a group of Alfas and Porsches and pretty much ran with them for ¾ of the trip. We averaged around 120 for much of the trip. After checking-in at the Marriott Riviera in Cap d’ Ail we found a French restaurant on the side of the casino. There is not much to see in Monaco other than the casino, hot cars and yachts.

Pictures:
1. Our last morning in Florence from the room balcony.
2. Tuscan field on our way to find Chianti and olive oil. You could spend all day on Tuscany and never tire of it's beauty.
3. Some people just don't know what to do with themselves when left alone with a camera.

Day 16

02 Novembre 2007 – Beautiful Mediterranean; they really lie out on rocks
The following morning we drove around for a while, but could not tour the palace as the Prince was home. We then headed to Nice along the coast with the windows down and sunroof open as the weather finally reached over 70 degrees. The way that I planned out the trip was to have the last few days as “cool down” days. We were not rushing around trying to see much. They only thing I really wanted to see in Nice was the Matisse museum, but it was closed. We basically spent most of the day on the beach and walking along Promenade des Anglais.

Pictures:

Day 17

03 Novembre 2007 – Cannes; Gorges du Verdon; no traffic lights and one lane, when did I get back to the U.S.
As we left Nice we decided to eat breakfast in Cannes since we were getting a pic of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès for a friend ours whom was a film major. When you begin your drive from Cannes there are a plethora of perfume factory in the small villages. We then took the N85 Route Napoleon to Castellane, then the D952 through to the Gorges du Verdon. This is definitely a must see; great roads and scenery. There are plenty of areas to get out and take in the beauty of the second largest canyon in the world. At one of the mountain plateaus were the fields where lavender is grown. My girlfriend was a little bummed that the lavender was already harvested. After we came around one of many blind corners we were greeted by a large turqouise-green lake called St. Croix. It is definitely a trip stopper.
The nav disc started acting up for the umpteenth time as we made our way into Schwiez. At one point it had us drive down a road about four miles, then turn around go through a neighborhood and back down the same road again before giving us a disc error again. The disc refused to eject (and yes I checked the CD player), so we had to exit the car, walk away and come back for it to eject the disc.
For some reason we were routed through downtown Genève. There was traffic galore, only one lane for regular traffic and the other for buses only. At one intersection we could not figure out why traffic was moving so slow. When we got to the light we found out why. There is no signage before the intersection to let you know which lane is the turn lane. As we got farther down this under construction road there were no working lights and no one directing traffic. Then as we get back on the highway there are people riding in the left lane, not letting the faster traffic pass. I begin to wonder have I been teleported back to the U.S. and no one told me.
As we approach the Schweiz/Deutschland border I realize that this is the first controlled border crossing we have encountered. The German officer was very interested in how I picked up the car in München, but was coming back into Deutschland. After a few minutes of explaining how the vehicle was purchased and showing all the paperwork he sent me on my way. The ride to Mainz was pretty uneventful with the exception of my girlfriend breaking our rule to stick with local cuisine. About 40 minutes outside of Mainz she decided that she could not wait and wanted to stop at a McDonald’s.

Pictures:
1. Where the Cannes film festival is held.
2. Entrance to Palais des Festival et Congre.
3-5. Gorge du Verdon in French Alps.
6. Gorge du Verdon in French Alps in black & white. Ang took with her camera.

Day 18

04 November 2007 - Die Grüne Hölle; vineyards on a mountainside, but closed again
After searching for a Deutsche Bank and a bite for breakfast, it was off to Der Nürburgring. We first stopped at the Hotel AmTiergarten to unload everything from the car, then we head over to the ‘Ring. Once I read the laundry list of rules and regulations, I with some trepidation purchased a one lap ticket for 19€. For proof of my deed I had my girlfriend photograph me as I went through the gate. She was not interested in riding with me and said she would sit this out.
As I got back in the car and adjusted my seat and mirrors, tightened the seat bolsters I took a big deep breath trying to control the excited shaking of my hands. I approach the gate waiting for someone to see the zöll tag and stop me from entering the road. Well no one did and I was off. As I drove down the speed restricted lane and around the cones my heart began to beat faster and faster. Then I hit the throttle and shift from 2nd to 3rd I had a grin as big as The Joker. My “I’M DOING IT, I’M DOING IT, I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM DRIVING THE NÜRBURGRING” moment occurred as I passed the stands. My pure excitement mixed with pure attentiveness as all that went through my mind was enjoy the ride, but pay attention to my driving lines and mirrors. It is amazing how your senses are heightened as nothing but adrenaline is pumping through your body.
I fell in behind a modded Alfa and just followed the lines he took, while passing quite a few cars. We hit speeds of well over 130 on a couple of straight-aways. I can’t remember where on the road I was, but there was a section that crested and the Alfa left the road surface. I saw this and came off the throttle and Cooper did not leave the road, but I could feel that it barely held contact. As I crested, there was a quick right turn and I saw the line the Alfa took. I downshifted and hit the brakes HARD feeling the ABS kick in before the turn-in and accelerated through turn as my reaction to the turn was a second late. You could hear the tire screaming for dear life.
No matter what I did I could not get the rear to come loose. I did turn off the traction for a corner or two and then quickly turned it back on. Now, I remember Carrie Underwood was playing when I entered the ‘Ring, but I could not tell you what was playing. I do however remember humming. YES…HUMMING…a la Sylvester Stallone in “Driven” to the sound of the exhaust note.
As quickly as I began, it was over. The smile I had when I started quickly came back. As I got out of the car I was shaking so bad from the adrenaline rush that my girlfriend could not get a clear pic of me. She said I was gone somewhere around ten minutes. When I went around the car to check it you could feel the seething heat, smell the brakes, the burning rubber from the tires and the exhaust was smoking for a good ten minutes. I could not stop moving for at least 15 minutes. I then mentally crossed this off my “Things to do before I die” list.
As I was coming down off my adrenaline high another 335i pulled in and parked near me. It had the M kit on it (UK spec) with the carbon fiber trim. The woman that got out from behind the wheel had the same reaction I did. Her passengers although on shaky legs had big smiles. After talking for over 15 minutes and happily explaining the Euro Delivery for the umpteenth time we parted ways with “safe journey”. The car did get a lot of looky-loos and a few questions. As we exited the parking lot is when it got the most stop and stares. I think it was more for how the color accentuates the design more than the actual car. I returned the thumbs up I got from people as we left and went off to Zell in the Mosel Region.
The drive to Zell was a bit tame compared to how I had been driving the past couple of days, but damn it is a great drive. Once again I forgot it was a Sunday and EVERYTHING IN DEUTSCHLAND IS CLOSED ON SUNDAY. So all the vineyards were closed. After putzing around the Mosel River we went off to look for something to eat. Zell is an idyllic village that is surrounded by vineyards that line the mountainside.

Pictures:
1. Proving I did the deed of driving the Nurburgring. Ang sat this one out. She had enough of "spirited driving".
2. Almost to the gate. But she was willing to record my deed for posterity.
3. A little more
4. Put in my ticket
5. And I'm off. Since Ang refused to ride with me you will have to search youtube and Google for an explanation of this road to understand its appeal.
6. Me arriving back. It was one long adrenaline rush. I can cross one more thing of my "Thing to do before I Die" list.
7. Nurburgring flags flapping in the wind.
8. The woman next to Ang had just come in from her lap on the 'Ring. Her car is the same model as mine. Only her car is a UK spec with the M option.
9. A map of what the road looks like. This is not for the nut with a death wish or the person that likes to drive outside their limits or the car's limits. The rules of the road still apply.
10. Me still coming down off my adrenaline high.
11. A Ferrari 360 Spider preparing for a ride.
12. Ferrari, BMW, Porsche ready for take-off

Day 19

05 November 2007 – Last day with Cooper; 155mph….HOLY CRAP!!!
I awoke this morning with a bit of sadness. I knew this would be my last day with Cooper for the next six weeks. After another great breakfast at the hotel, we headed back to Zell in search of Riesling. We found a little mom and pop place on the east side of the river. They spoke no English, so of course my girlfriend kept looking at me whenever they ask a question. It was again fun using my limited understanding of German to get us through another situation. We purchased ten bottles of Riesling and set a course for Bremerhaven.
It seems the farther north we travelled the more construction we encountered. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever get a chance to do 155. Then I came to a few no restriction areas where I felt safe enough to hit the magical 155, trying to get my girlfriend to photograph the speedometer was another thing. The car was still smooth are butter. No vibration from the steering wheel, I mean the only way I knew I was going that fast was looking the speedometer and the fact that the cabin pressure made our ears pop. Although the few times I hit those speeds were short lived, they were exhilarating nonetheless.
After we got into Bremerhaven it took about an hour to find a self-serve car wash. The two that Alice gave us were drive-thru and one of the laser type washes. After asking a few people we were no closer to our objective. Someone finally told us there was one near a BMW dealer. I put in for the closest BMW Center and voilà there was one across the street from the dealer. After pulling out my wash mitt and car shampoo, I started my seemingly impossible task of getting all the bugs off. I was quite shock throughout the trip at the amount bugs there were on the front of the car given that it is autumn going into winter. Most of the bugs must have washed off during the rain showers we hit Saturday night on our way to Mainz. So that is the secret….drive through rainstorm at 120 mph and bugs-be-gone.
Another surprise was that the water was heated at the car wash. It made washing a lot easier on the hands and dirt removal. I spent quite a bit of time just going over the car with the jet wand letting the hot water do most of the work and soaking into the bug splatter. Thirty minutes, 12€, ½ bottle of car shampoo (I filled a small water bottle before I left home) later Cooper was bug splatter and brake dust free.
The drop-off was ten minutes away. If this is where you are dropping off your car, park over to the right and go into the office at the gate entrance. Be sure to bring you passport, and car paperwork. You will fill out a form and they will give you a gate pass. The Harms office is two rights and straight. Harms is on the third floor and left. The paperwork, wait and vehicle inspection took about an hour. I did ask the woman that was helping us about JSpira dropping his car off. She said yes she did remember him and his car had already left port. When I inquired about how long the car would be at the port, she said that the car we be there for four business days for prep and then loaded on the next vessel.
We asked her to call a taxi after the inspection, but she must have misunderstood because she told us she call one before we came outside. So picture us trying to get everything out of the car and repacked before the taxi showed. The tool kit, first aid kit, warning triangle, front license plate, Joern's nav disc, manuals, mats and everything we purchased along the way and luggage. Now speed up this mad dash so it looks like we starring in our own version of an early 20th century movie.
The taxi to the train station was 20€ and the tickets to Hamburg were 13€. Again no one came around to check tickets. We did have to transfer trains just outside of downtown. This is the only time I had to say WTF about Deutschland. The platform we got off on had no elevator or escalator. So we had to carry the bags up the steps and then over to the other platforms. And you know what….there was no elevator for the other platform and the escalator only went up. It was not like the other stations we experienced in München. In doing all this moving we missed the train. Since the hotel was only two blocks from the train station we opted to walk it off.
Finally checked-in, we headed back out in the rain to find a place to eat. For that one last glass of Riesling, for that one last Radler, that one last schnitzel, the last enjoyment of German hospitality. Although we did not get a chance to tour Hamburg what we did see makes it well worth a stop on our next trip.

Pictures:
1-2. Yes you are reading the speedometer correctly. After hitting the 1200 mile break-in somewhere in the French Alps I finally got a chance to open her up fully. Not to sound preachy, but if you do not feel comfortable or skilled driving at these speeds, then don't. Yes it is fun, but better to not have tried and live. The autobahns are not personal race tracks.

3-4. Dropping Cooper off at the shipper. See ya in 6-8 weeks

Day 19

06 November 2007 – Auf Wiedersehen!, Ciào, Au Revoir; Beautiful sunset; Are you sure this is all you have to declare
We awoke this morning a little more sad that a trip with its one year delay was over and we would soon be back to our daily grind and bad drivers. First order of business was to figure out how to break everything into the larger suitcases to fit and so the wine and olive oil would arrive unscathed. Our solution was to wrap the bottles individually in clothes with a cushion of clothing on the bottom, sides, and top. Then distribute them between the three large suitcases. With this worked out we were off to catch the shuttle bus to the airport.
If you are leaving from Hamburg the shuttle for the airport leaves from the far end of the train station. You will see a lot of buses parked along the street. The bus is one of the last in that line. If you are unsure just ask one of the drivers and they will happily direct you.
Getting the VAT refund was an experience in itself. We had to go upstairs to the desk and then they sent us downstairs to customs so they could inspect what we had. Trying to find the door that we needed to go through was adventuresome to say the least. It is a nondescript door that you could pass ten times and never know what was behind it. After the customs agent stamped the form, we went back upstairs only to be informed that they did not refund the tax. We have to mail it and it will be refunded to us. I do not plan to see this money anytime soon or if at all.
We finally boarded the plane and settled in our seats for the seven hour flight home. With a champagne toast to keeping our sanity, a wonderful trip, lasting three weeks of being together non-stop and not killing each other our trip was over. The fitting final scene was the three hour sunset.
Once we arrived at customs in Washington I was directed to bag inspection for all the wine we had. When the customs agent asked had I been truthful in my statements I said of course, but if she wanted to see all of the bottles we would be here for a while. I think she was at the end of her shift as she just told me they usually charge a duty, but to go on through. And with that the trip was officially O-V-E-R.

Final thoughts and other "stuff"

Final Thoughts
I tried to give as much comic relief to the issues we encountered, with the exception of my contract issue. Everything else I took it in stride and chaulked it up to being part of the journey. If my attemempt at humor came off a whining that was not how I meant for it to sound.
Do not infer from my description of driving in Deutschland and Italía that I drove with reckless abandon. Drive fast when the speed limit allows and when you feel safe to do so.
This itinerary may not be for everyone. I will take the advice of not trying to do and see too much that has been given on the forum more seriously next time. I would advise anyone considering purchasing a car this way to stop thinking and just do it (no pun intended). The only hard part is going to be waiting for my car to be redelivered. Take your time and savor the moments, God knows there were plenty of them. The next trip we will book our first and last night accommodations ahead and leave the rest to task as the trip unravels. I set-up season passes to record Smart Travels with Rudy Maxa, Rick Steves’ Europe and Samantha Brown’s Passport to Europe to get ideas on what to see.
I ran out of adjectives to describe what we saw. The somewhat colorful descriptions I used to describe the Alps just don’t do them justice. Pictures don’t do them justice. Even in person they look like they are photoshopped, you have to see them in person. I will stick with majestic and massive as my descriptors.
The mom and pop hotels are just as adequate as the large chain hotels. The next time we will book only the mom and pop establishments. They were are extremely clean and service was impeccable plus hot much time do you actually spend in your room.
The car is just an awesome piece of art and engineering. If you are not a badge whore, then and only then can you really appreciate the pure enjoyment of driving one of these cars…IMHO. Yes there are other cars out there more luxurious, faster and possibly cheaper and somewhat more reliable, but can they do what a BMW does. Any car can go fast in a straight line, but can those other cars corner at 100+ without screaming UNCLE.
People were nothing but cordial and happy to help where ever we went. I never once experienced the media driven “we do not respect the United States” attitude. If anything people were full of questions. So people pack your bags, order your car and get going. I promise you will have the trip of a lifetime. Just keep everything in perspective and let what will be…be. No matter how many times you have been to Europe the ED experience makes the trip just a bit sweet.
I kept my word to Joern that I would pick a bottle of whatever it was he drank. He ask for Asbach Uralt, a German Brandy.
Anyone interested I have a list of just about everything from hotels that had good reviews and what they offer, places to eat, emergency numbers and U.S. embassy listings, plane seat charts from seatguru.com. Whatever you may have a question about or need researched, it is quite possible I have it saved in Excel or Word. PM me if you want me to send what I have.
Many thanks to JSpira, ADC, beewang and the rest of the bimmerfest community, also e90post.com.

General Stuff

1. Yes I can confirm ADC’s theory that you need some form of a Physics or Engineering degree in order to operate the shower.
2. The half of shower door you get at most of the hotels will make you appreciate your showering experience even more when you get a room with a full shower door. Funny the things we take for granted when they are no longer available.
3. Using the subway systems and bus is a bit on the honor system in Deutschland.
4. Your room key is your light switch. Insert card and jiggle to the left or right. It depends on the hotel.
5. If the only news I had access to was CNN World, I would probably have a skewed view of our country also.
6. “Why haven’t we thought of these in the US?” will be a phrase you will repeat many, many, many times during your trip.
7. The doors on the trains in Deutschland will close automatically, but to exit you must open the door yourself. This makes sense in that if no one is exiting on your car, then the heat or cool air is retained on that car.
8. The S-Bahn does not run as frequent as the U-Bahn. If you have to transfer to the S-Bahn, then walk fast to the transfer point. If you miss the train you could wait up to 20 minutes. And yes they run on time without fail.
9. The rules of subway escalator etiquette are universal. Standers on the right, movers on the left.
10. For real, for real, pack a few pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Alternate days of use and repeat.
11. You will pay for water every place you go in Europe. Remember to ask for “still wasser” in Deutschland.
12. If you have a particular route you want to take do not depend of I-Drive to choose it for you. I had a printout from viamichelin.com for the routes I wanted to take in certain countries. This way I could find these roads on the screen. I.E. when we left Nueschwanstein the nav wanted to take us through Österreich to Garmisch. I wanted to take the Alpen Road to Garmisch. By the way on 17 the turn off for the Alpen Road is well marked.
13. I-Drive great for finding nearby banks, restaurants, hotels and shopping
14. If you are a Bank of America customer, then you can use Deutsche Banks in Germany and PNB Paribas in France without incurring ATM fees.
15. Even with the power converter we had, the iron did not make it through the trip.
16. Use Google, trip advisor, the country’s tourism page, conde nast, Google maps, viamichelin.com and search tool on forums i.e. bimmerfest.com’s European Delivery forum. They are your friend when looking for anything concerning your trip are great sites for trip planning certain routes off the beaten path.
17. Using smaller usually family run hotels in villages and towns when you can, instead of larger chains will get you more of a cultural feel and better rates.
18. Remember you are no longer in the United States, the “how come you don’t speak English, arrogant American attitude” is not cool. It will almost certainly reinforce the idea that we are arrogant.
19. Ignorance to laws and customs is not an excuse.
20. There is a line on all glass that shows how much of that beverage that you are supposed to get.
21. Don’t try to see too much in one day. First, you will get information overload. Second, you will not enjoy what you do see, because of information overload.
22. If you are going to venture into the countryside in any of these countries (I can’t highly recommend this enough) be sure that you have close to full tank of gas. We did not come upon many petrol stations in the mountains or countryside.
23. Most gas stations are open 24hrs. After hours the pumps are on, but there is no one actually working the station. So even if it looks close the pumps are most likely still on, just use your plastic.

Hotels and restaurants listed some are of recommendations through bimmerfest.com and tripadvisor.com. If I refer to a room as small it is not a knock against the hotel, when I say breakfast is included it is typical European fare. These attributes are typical of European hotels. If you want a room size comparable to what we get in the U.S., then stay at a chain hotel. Although even with the chain hotels you may be disappointed.

Hotel Reviews
1. Meliá Milano, Via Masaccio 19 Milan ITALY 20149, Tel: (39) 02 44406 - Fax: (39) 02 44406600 - Email: melia.milano@solmelia.com - A splendid hotel with a grand staircase as you enter the lobby. The lobby area is ornate and the staff is eager to help at any time. The room was a nice size especially by European standards with high ceilings, so it gave the illusion that the room was even bigger than it really was. The bed was a California king. The closet was a bit funny. On one side there are shelves and on the other side you can hang clothes. When you first look at it you would think it is a regular closet. Internet is available for a cost.
2. Courtyard Marriott Munich City Center, Schwanthalerstrasse 37, München 80336, Tel: 011 49 89 54884880 – Modern hotel and clean. King size bed (one mattress), small room, but adequate. Usual amenities that one would expect. Room cost 199€ not including breakfast or internet. Internet was 12.95€ for hi-speed. Parking was 16€, but I would have no qualms with parking on the street. I saw plenty of MB, Porsches, and BMWs parked on the street. It is not in a questionable area, I saw plenty of people out and about in the evening. There is a theater about a block down from the hotel and a few chic restaurants. When I told Joern where we were staying he kind of laughed, because there are a few adult toy stores and strip places nearby. He also said that it was a perfectly safe area. The hotel is on a main street and is between 400-800 meters to Marienplatz (This we found out after the first day. When you leave the hotel turn right out of the door and walk. If you are the lazy type the subway is back the way you came from Hauptbahnhof and you will see the entrance steps. There is a Deutsche Bank directly across the street and a Calumet Photography store next door to the hotel for shutterbugs. I would definitely stay here again without a moment’s hesitation.
3. Dorint SportHotel, Mittenwalderstrasse 59, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Tel: 011 49 88 217060
Fax: 011 49 88 21706618 - Great hotel and staff. Our room was at the back of the property. They have these tunnels that run from the main building to all of the cottages. This room was huge. Breakfast is included and a great spread it was. Free covered parking. There is one PC in the main building for free use. I would definitely stay here again. Great view of the Alps.
4. Hotel Marco’s, Via Coloniola, 43, 22100 Como, IT, Tel: 39 031 303628 info@hotelmarcos.it www.hotelmarcos.it – Great mom & pop hotel. Breakfast included. Great balcony view of lake. Extremely clean. Parking is free in the lot next to the hotel in the evening, but you must pay meter in the morning. Careful which spot you park in. Will stay stay here again. Rooms are small, but how long are you actually in the room.
5. Hotel Axial, Via dei Calzaiuoli 11, 50122 Firenze, IT Tel: 39 055 218984, info@hotelaxial.it www.hotelaxial.it – Great mom & pop hotel. A stone’s throw from the Duomo. Breakfast included. No parking. Reasonably price considering location. Don’t be thrown by the inside hall. Walk up the steps and you will be greeted by modern sliding glass doors and friendly staff. Will definitely stay here for our full stay on the next trip.
6. Westin Excelsior, Piazza Ognissanti 3, 50123 Firenze, IT Tel: 39 055 27151 – Would definitely stay here again. We had a view of the River Arno. Parking was at the Garage Europa for 20€/day Borgo Ognissanti 96. Excellent service that you would expect from this hotel. No breakfast included.
7. Marriott Riviera La Porte de Monaco, Cap d’Ail 06320 France Tel: 33 49 2106767 – Would stay here again. Balcony view of Meditteranean Sea and port. No breakfast. Parking was 18-20€
8. Le Meridien Nice, 1 Promenade des Anglais 06046 Nice, FR Tel: 33 49 7034444 mail.nice@lemeridien.com www.nice.lemeridien.com – Not impressed after staying at the Marriott Riviera and Westin Excelsior. On the bright side we did pick up a wireless connection. I would probably try the Best Western a few properties down. A side note is that hotels like the Best Western are different in Europe than they are here in the U.S. It look great from the outside. The Le Meridien is across the street from the beach. Parking 23€
9. Hyatt Regency Mainz, Malakoff-Terrasse 1, Mainz, Germany 55116 Tel: 49 61 31731234 mainz@hyatt.de – Would definitely stay here again. Beautiful hotel with view of Rhine. Parking was 18€. Room was huge and modern.
10. Hotel AmTiergarten, Kirchweg 4, 53520 Nürburg Tel: 49 02 6919220 info@am-tiergarten.de - Would definitely stay here again. Friendly staff and clean rooms. Close to Nürburgring entrance. Free parking and web access. Picked up wireless network. Breakfast included. Room were small, but typical.
11. Park Hyatt Hamburg, Bugenhagenstrasse 8, Hamburg 20095 Tel: 49 40 33321234 – Would definitely stay here again. Close to train station. Beautiful hotel. Do not know about parking because Cooper was left at the port.
Restaurants – prices do not include tip

1. La Vita - Weinstrasse 6, 80333 München. We had formacci pizza, salad, Radler, water, two apple strudel for a total 23,70€. Great restaurant
2. Ratskellar – Marienplatz 8, 80331 München. Dinner consisted of .5L bottle of water, wheat beer, glass of wine, potato soup, apple cider red cabbage, beef roast, bratwurst, and apple strudel with ice cream for 62,50€. Excellent choice
3. Spatenhaus an der Oper - This was the first restaurant in which we were seated by someone. In all the other restaurants you walk in and seat yourself. It is across the street from the Residenz entrance. Dinner included Riesling, pilsner beer, Radler, salad, tomato cream soup, chicken schnitzel, tafelspitz. Total was 58,50€
4. Ristorante Venezia, Hauptstasse 44, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchien – excellent, excellent food, reasonably price and great service. Ordered 2 Radlers, minestrone, salad, gnocchi sorrentina, formaggi pizza = 25,20€
5. Osteria Ristorante Pepò, Via Rosina 4/6r. Firenze – excellent food and atmosphere. A few blocks from the train station near the Mercato Centrale. 54€. Can’t remember what we had. 2 entreès, bottle of water, 3 glasses of wine, salads, dessert.
6. Le Tip Top, 11 Av Speluges 98000 Monte Carlo – great food. On side of casino and a short walk down to waterfront. Penne and spaghetti, marguerite pizza, glass of wine bottle of water. 29,50€

Vineyards
1. Azienda Agricola Agriturismo Rocca Dei F.lli Viti, Loc. Rocca 53011 Castellina in Chianti Tel: 05 77 740814 – mom & pop operation. Excellent Chianti and olive oil. Picked up ten bottles of olive oil and 4 bottles of Chianti.
2. Haus Nahlen, Erzeugerabfüllung (producer bottled) Weingut Joachim, Albert Nahlen 56856 Zell-Merl/Mosel Tel: 65 422609 - 10 bottles purchased. Excellent Riesling. Mom & pop operation. They spoke some english, but two funny people. He wanted us to drink, but we were trying to tell me we had a lot of driving to do. He did explain a few things to us about what to look for on a bottle of Riesling. Look for Qualitätswein on some labels and on others Qualitätswein mit Prädikat.
