Glad to see BMW Ag dumped garbage Pilkington for Sekurit windshields on M3's...

Well! after I went through two Pilkington windshields.i decided I was gonna do something different if i needed a new windshield. For my third windshield i went with Safelite auto glass, fortunately they don't make the E90 glass and use Saint-Gobain Sekurit glass which is better than Pilkington .

Unlike Pilkington that looked like it was sand blasted at night under street lights or during the day under direct sun light just after 3 months,Sekurit is still looking great that new, expensive car clear glass look.I made the change about 6 months ago, safelite did a great job and only charged $296.54 .

To my great surprise the new M3 is using saint-Gobain Sekurit.I hope the E9x line will follow suit.

The rain sensor is working just like on the sekurit glass.

I've got about 11K miles and my windshield is very pitted. Of course I've got a few rock injuries as well so I don't expect it to last more than 30K miles at which point I'll go this route.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to decide between Pilkington and Securit. My Pilikington is already sand blasted after 3 months on the road, and it did not survive a stone chip.

May I ask how did you get Safelite to do it for only $296.54? My local Safelite said "I would go to the dealer if I were you".

Sounds like I'm fortunate that my 335 came with all Securit windows.

Did the new rain sensor come attached to the Securit? I hate Pilkington, softest glass out there.

If that question was to me, yes.

I hate the windshield that comes with the car. I have NEVER had a chip before in 10+ years a driving. Then, get the 335 and have a chip within 2 weeks. I might try to argue with the dealer that the glass is subpar and they should change it, but when that fails, as I am sure it will, I will go to safelite.

I never actually looked. I assumed it was Pilkington, but you know what they say about assumptions.

My car has not arrived yet from ED so I can't go look for myself. Is the windshield brand located on the windshield somewhere?

I guess I can blame the tiny pits on our 325i's windshield on the fact that they're Pilkingtons. My X3 has Sekurit, and it's held up really well, and resisted chips even after I thought they'd crack for sure when following some trucks.......

And Sekurit is BETTER than Pilkington?!?!

The "good" news? My late '07 build 335 has a sekurit windshield.

The bad news? this afternoon, after having had the car for exactly a week with 210 miles on the odometer, a pebble (I assume; never saw it) hit my windshield just below my passenger side sun visor at about 70 mph. It left a tiny chip, but with a three-qarters-of-a-bullseye circle around it the size of a quarter. Looks to me that it will be borderline as to whether they can seal it or if it means a new windshield for me.

Very, very angry about this. I've never had a windshield on any car do this from a stone hit on the highway, and it certainly didn't sound any louder than past impacts I've had in other cars.

Sorry to hear about that. I had no rocks hit my car in Germany but probably the second day back in the US I had what sounded like a boulder bounce off dead center of my windshield - left a nice divot but so far it's stayed just that. I got another one the other day closer to my field of vision but again, so far it's staying just a small pockmark. I definitely have the Pilkington as it's very easy to see the label from the driver's seat.

Cant you get full glass coverage from your insurance company that will pay for it? I'm always insured for comprehensive with full glass. The premium for full glass maybe more expensive on a 3er since its got the auto wiper sensors, wouldn't know though since none of my other cars had it.

When my GTI had a huge crack in the windshield I called Geico at 8pm that night and by 10am they were in my parking lot at work to fix it. It cost me $20 to tip the guy.

I've got a $100 comprehensive deductible through State Farm. The difference in premium would have eaten up that deductible in short order, so I opted to self insure for the $100. After 16 years insured with them without a glass claim, I've more than made up the difference. The dealership is going to let me know if the ding can be fixed, in which case it is likely under $100 and I'll just pay out of pocket. If it needs to be repaired it becomes a bigger hassle, as I need to get an insurance approved shop to do it.

I'm not so much worried about the catastrophic rock hit that necessitates an immediate replacement of the windshield (thus no extra insurance for it - I've never had to actually replace on in Atlanta despite lots of road debris). What bugs me is windshields that look like a field of stars when really clean at night with headlights shining through them. I want a durable windshield that is clear when it's clean.

My car has a Sekurit windshield... checked it out this morning. I gotta say it is pretty strong glass. The rock that chipped my glass was huge and it sounded like a gun shot when it hit but it didnt starburst. Kudos to Sekurit.

Thanks for the post! I figured there were more glass brands to choose from, but haven't gotten to the point of looking into doing a replacement. I've been very discouraged about the windshield on my '06 e90... very surprised BMW would put such a low quality part on their "ultimate driving machines." If you're annoyed just looking out of your windshield, that's not very conducive to an ultimate driving experience.

During my 4-hour extended test drive of a dealer demo 335i back in September 2007 I had a car pull in front of me on the freeway that threw up a big rock and put a huge crack in the windshield. I could see the rock flying through the air heading towards the windshield. Needless to say it was a little awkward when I took the car back to the dealership. I was honest and told them what happened. They did not make me pay for the damage. I've had my Acura for 6-years and never picked up a serious crack. Several little pits, but no serious cracks. Hopefully my new 2008 335 has a Sekurit windshield.

Question: just how do you check? Is there some code etched onto the windshield that I can look up on the 'net?
