I'll retry the USB option, but from my last test, I couldn't really discern the difference between the USB stick and the iPod.
I tried my current gen nano plugged into the console USB port of my 2011 50i (with Individual Sound, not Premium Sound in case that matters) using the original Apple cable and got an "unsupported device" warning on the display.

I stand corrected. I did not realize they have changed this option for 2011. A USB adapter was not part of premium sound for 2010 models, which is what I have.

Anyone order '11 X5 w/o Nav?

I ordered premium sound w/o Nav. Will I still have the HD to upload music?

That's exactly what I ordered - No hard drive (although it's only a 20GB drive offered - would hold only 2/3 of my music).

I think the only way that it works is if you use the device as a "hard disk", or enable disk use - something along those lines.. I remember being able to use an old 30GB iPod as a hard drive (on a computer), but that was several years ago. I have seen a few posts that peeps were able to get that to work, but I've never actually seen it myself.

Wow, this thread is massively confusing and I read the whole thing.

Let me contribute some facts without speculation.
I just received 2011 x5 5.0i. NO premium sound
I have
1. USB port in the glove compartment that I can import music from to the bmw HD but cannot play music from it (so buying 64gig USB stick is pointless)
2. I have AUX port in the arm rest compartment but NO USB so while I can play my ipod, I have to control the music on the player.

Here is something I still have not seen anyone ask or address and would love to see someone write up a DIY guide

1. How can we upgrade the HD in the bmw to something larger?

Is the "ipid/usb adpater" that Y-cable that they give to you to stick into the USB and aux port, or is it actually installing the USB port in the arm rest so that you can use it with your ipod? In other words, if you don't get it, you're screwed (if you want to use an ipod, that is). I thought it was just the cable and all the Xs had both the ports -- obviously I could be wrong.

In mine, the USB port in the arm rest is about 1 inch to the right of the aux port covered by a slidy thing. I think that its hard to see and to feel unless you know that its there; unlike the aux port, which is pretty obvious.

If you find the port, and you want an adapter, you should be able to get one from one of the BMW parts dealers that mail order for about $30 part#61 120 440 812 (SA6FL)

Hmmmm... Do you have NAV?

BTW the thread is so confusing because it is a real life example of the classical tale of the blind men describing an elephant. Only in this case it's not one elephant, but rather an elephant, a rhino, a hippo.... depending on the X5s model year and options, including some which are not obvious like NAV

As I just posted above, the presence, location and functionality of any USB port(s) depend on both the model year and the options -- some of which are not obvious like NAV.

In 2009 the "iPod/USB option" moved the standard USB port from the glove compartment to the center console, activated the ability to use the USB port to control an iPod and provided the Y adapter cable that plugs into both the USB and Aux in ports. IOW in our 2009 35d with Premium Sound and the iPod/USB option but without NAV there is only ONE USB port, it is in the center console. It can be used to control an iPod or play back music from a USB stick.

In later models this changed because of the new iDrive, hard drive based NAV etc.

The Y-cable comes with the vehicle as part of the iPod/USB adapter option. The iPod/USB port is installed in addition to the AUX in the center console, and you receive the Y cable to plug in your iPod. Not all X's have the USB slot in the armrest. If you don't get this USB port (and Y-cable), no, you cannot control your iPod/iPhone via iDrive. Again, the iPod/USB is an option, just like roof rails or comfort access.

then take the USB out and the music will be CD quality on my car???

can anyone confirm this?
I do it everyday and that is why i did not get the IPOD connector.
I think if you have the nav the you get hard drive, and when you have the hard drive i assume you get the usb port in the glove.

I have NAV in my car, USB in the glove and Music imported in to the hard drive can be controled via IDRIVE. This is the fact so can some one tell me what would be the reason to get IPOD adaptor if you have the USB port and the functionality of importing music.

If you have the iPod connector, I THINK you can navigate the ipod's music through your iDrive.
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

Yep, that's the reason. We have the iPod connector in all our cars. We can access playlists, choose artists, change songs on my wife's iPhone through the iDrive. And on the new cars withthe Combox Controller (week 40 build, onward) you also get the album cover art.

OTOH when my son wants to listen to something from his Sansa, he just plugs it into the Aux port. Nothing appears on the iDrive screen, and he has to use the Sansa controls to navigate. Since he's too young to drive, that's not an issue. But if he were behind hte wheel, I would NOT want him glancing down to his Sansa trying to find Cold Play. IMHO that's as bad as texting while driving.

EDIT: Just in case this thread is not confusing enough.... The iPod adapter WOULD allow my son to use the iDrive controls to scroll through playlists, etc., so it IS functional with devices that don't bear the Apple logo. However, my son's content is all subscription (Rhapsody) and the DRM's don't allow it to play through the iPod controller, only through the Aux in jack.
