Navigation system update from BMW

I got a piece of mail today from BMWNA. It says that for "just $199", I can update my navigation system.

It seems like robbery to me. Shouldn't BMW offer it for free to its current customers? By the way, my car was delivered in Dec. 07 so I don't think it's really needed. But who knows these days. The navigation system gets confused sometimes.

I believe they are referring to the map dvd. Every auto manufacturer charges for the updates. You can usually buy them off the supplier's website, sometimes for a hair less.

It's not a nav system update from BMW, it's the map update from Navteq

Yet one can buy a full Garmin/Navteq North America data card (not an update) for $140. Not sure what the updates cost... if it's a lot less, then perhaps there is more than a little gouging going on here?

While it's called an update, what it is really is the latest DVD with the updated maps for North America.

They should give you the 2008 DVD free if you took delivery after, say, mid-November. Lamesauce.

My new BMW, delivered to me last week, came with the 2007.2 dvd. I will see about getting the 2008 from them.

This nav system get more confused than my old Magellan system.

Today it had me turning the wrong way, left, onto a limited access highway. It is a good thing there was a right turn only sign at the stop sign. Another instance of confusion the nav indicated the next left turn. that would have put me back on the same road going in the opposite direction. And finally I'm in front of the destination waiting to turn right into their parking lot and the nav system wanted me to proceed another thousand feet and turn left.

I'm quite disappointed with the system now that I have used it for a cross country trip. It gets "lost" frequently and shows a "navigation assistance not available" message. That should not happen on any US numbered highway that is more than a year old. In this case it is US 183 in Austin, Texas.
It was delivered in November 2007 with the 2007.2 maps.

My 535, deliverd at the end of Feb, came with 2007.2. And when I called and asked about getting the 2008, I was told no.

The Navteq DVD contains the data for the system (maps, points of interest, information, etc.). The car (Progman) contains the OS, user interface, etc.

So getting an updated Navteq DVD doesn't change the UI--only an updated Progman could do that.

Garmin updates are what, $70 for a DVD containing latest Navteq data? Makes the $199 update price tag here seem opportunistic. So gotta agree with OP. Guess they figure if you chose the $1,710 invoice integrated Nav over the $200-$1,000 alternatives, you probably won't care too much.

I just bought the 2008.1 from my BMW dealer and it was much more accurate than the previous version I had which was 2004.x...lol. For me...it was worth the 199 to get updated information compared to my 4 year old disk that came with my 2005 545.

I probably wont upgrade this one until 2010 unless my area is specifically mentioned.

If your interested..***** it quick...my friend at the parts counter says they are selling out the day they arrive each time. FYI.
