E90, E92, and E93 with the N54 engine produced from 06/01/2006 through 10/28/2006
SITUATION

An internal component in the high-pressure pump (HDP) may fail, causing drivability symptoms such as longer starting times or erratic engine operation. It may also lead to a premature failure of the HDP on vehicles at higher mileages.Should this situation occur, the HDP emergency operation is activated and the Service Engine Soon lamp (MIL) is illuminated.Note:In this situation, the vehicle can continue to be driven, even for long distances, without any risk of breakdown.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E90, E92 and E93 vehicles with N54 engines which were produced from 06/01/2006 through 10/28/2006.In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. The chassis number ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.*******>********> *******>********>*******> ********>

If you remove the exhaust system, you should find it stamped on a cross member behind the fuel tank. Be sure to empty the fuel tank before you remove it.

j/k

check your dashboard by the lower left corner of the windshield, or the driver's door jamb. What they mean by the chassis number is the VIN (in this case, the last seven digits of it).

Interestingly enough, my chassis number matches the VFxxxx range in the SIB130208 bulletin, but my vehicle was produced in April of '07 and not during that one week timespan specified. I guess it's not so much the production week of the vehicle as it is the production week of the engine, that was then installed in vehicles having the aforementioned production week. It's interesting that my motor sat for over 2 months before being installed in my car.

I have almost 10k miles and not one hint of a HPFP problem, so I am very leery of having any work done, although I will have to take the car in to have the 6FL ipod scrolling and FM autoswitching issues fixed, so I guess they will perform this action, too.

does anyone know if the HPFP replacement requires removal of the front bumper for access?

It's not when your car was produced it's when the engine was produced.

Yeah, I came to that realization during my stream of consciousness post.

FWIW, I went over to United BMW of Roswell at lunch to try to pick up some coupons for the AJC car show (they didn't have any) and went ahead and made an appt. to get my 6FL FM switching issues corrected and the key reader didn't report any active campaigns for my vehicle.

Even though my VIN matches the range in the SIB, I guess that the list is not totally inclusive, in that there could be unaffected 335i's in those VIN ranges and mine must be one of them.

Bulletins are not recalls. Bulletins only come into affect if/when your car runs into that problem.

i have the ballasts for my HID fogs (i use them as driving lights to illuminate the road right in front of the car, very helpful in dodging NYC potholes) VHB taped to the bumper, but the bulb failure eliminators attached to the brake ducts. if they need to pul the bumper, i'll attach the eliminators to the inside of the bumper so it'll be an easy remove for them. what i dont want is for them to pull the bumper and get surprised when the brake ducts get yanked out with it.

from what i'm guessing, the HPFP is on the bottom front of the engine block, so they just need to remove the underbelly panel to get to it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are hitting the VIN ranges where failure is most likely to occur first, and I would guess that while there have been some 2008 failures, it's nothing like the first batch of cars in MY2006-2007. I remember after I'd ordered my car for ED back in early 2007 there were daily posts of people limping to the dealer and waiting a very long time for a replacement pump.

I'm just glad to see official acknowledgement of the problem by BMW.

My '08 vin number appears to fall into the numbers listed for the '06 builds. I wonder what that means. It's either a conspiracy or an indication that I don't really understand where that number is coming from. I am betting conspiracy.

VIN contains more than those last 5 digits, so the model year comes in the previous part. The last 5 digits are just a production counter, IMHO. My '08 also falls into the range of VF49706–VF52378.

Correct
the 10th digit of the VIN is the model year
the 11th digit is the assembly plant
digits 12-17 are the chassis serial number

so a MY 2007 car, produced in leipzig, with a serial number of F02103 would have a vin that looks like:

7VF02103
