E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Removing/Installing Seatback with storage

Tools Required
Wire snips
Needle Nose Pliers

Removing the Seatback
The seatback is has 4 hooks that grab onto the back of the seat. At the bottom of the seatback, there are 2 clips. The clips are considered one use only so you will destroy them when removing the seatback. If you move the seat forward, you will find the 2 clips along the bottom edge.

Use the wire snips or another cutting tool to remove the exposed heads on the clips. With the clips removed, you can remove the seatback.

To remove the seatback, you will slide it down and rotate it clockwise. There are 2 hooks along the top edge of the seatback and one hook on each side.

Remove the setback and set it out of the way.

With the setback removed, you can remove the remnants of the clips. The clips are a bit tough, they push in easy but do not pull out easy. I was able to reach down (thin, long hands) into the seat and feel the other end of the clips. Then I just pushed the clip up into the seat and removed it from the top. You will want to make sure your hands can fit in this way before pushing the clips up as you may not be able to get the clips out.

Installation

I wanted to add the Stowback (my name, in the process of trademarking it ) seatback which have a net. The Stowbacks are covered in vinyl so they look a bit nicer than the chincy plastic ones that come on the car. I guess you are paying for the vinyl as the Stowbacks retail for $112 each and are kind of a 'I really want that' mod.

Close-up of the difference:

Installation is the reverse of removal. Insert the new seatback clocked at about 2 o'clock in order to get all 4 of the hooks inside the back of the seat. Rotate the seatback counterclockwise and you will get the 4 hooks installed.

You will need to install 2 new clips along the bottom. They do not twist or screw in, you simply push them up.

Done.
