With my 2006 M Roadster all you have to do is press and hold the unlock button. The windows go down and then the top. Unfortuantely it won't go up... and it may not apply to all years. Also, you might take a look in the Z4 FAQ section. this may be addressed there...

If your car was built before April 2004, it doesn't have this ability from the factory. What it looks like in the video is someone has fitted an aftermarket solution. I've seen this set-up for early 3-series cabs, but I didn't know anyone had it working for the Z4.

You can put the top up by putting the key in the driver's side door lock and turning it (keeping it there) until the windows and roof closes. But no factory remote (roof closing) option in my 2008 Z4 - but on later Z4s you can remotely open the windows and roof by holding the unlock button down

Actually the You Tube video is of an aftermarket device, Reinhold Remote Roof Module, that isn only available in Europe as far as I know. They won't ship tot he states due to liablility issues (some dumba$$ shutting a kid or something in the roof). The Reinhold Remote Roof Module will allow you to open and close the roof with the remote key... You should be able to get it in the UK. I know some folks there that have it.

I was playing around with the remote for my 2005 3.0i Z tonight. I remember reading that that via the remote you can make the top go down, but I was never able to get it to work. But tonight.... I finally learned the secret. You have to press unlock once (unlocks driver door), press unlock again (unlocks passenger door), and then hold for like 6 seconds. Then..... it finally takes the top down. Unfortunately, there seems to be no combination posible that will raise the roof once again. Sad really... that would be fun and make sense. SOme of the other posters are probably right... considered some obscure hazzard for children etc. Just thought I would post this in case anyone else was not aware of this... and wanted to try. Enjoy...

I've got it working in my Z4. The guy actually does the key press wrong in the video, but it will still work. It just takes 3 'unlock' presses within 5 seconds to do the top down, or 3 'lock' presses within 5 seconds to put the top and then windows up.

How did you get it shipped to you, via Canada, or is there some other way?

via Canada. I had them shipped to me when I was up there for a week. My best advice to people is to make friends with someone in canada and have them reship them for you.

Also, the cheapest way to get these is off ebay.de. He routinely sells both modules at open auction and I got both for about half price. That just about covered the ridiculous shipping charges I had to deal with later. And, I wanted to 'legally' bring them into the US so I declared them and payed vat... another ridiculous cost I could have done without.

Just bought a 2004 Z4 last week and tried to put the top down with the key. It doesn't work on mine. Does the keyy need to be programed to do this?

Putting the top up with the remote is the function I really want to see in upcoming models. Putting the top down is great, and a real attention getter in parking lots, but putting the top up while outside the car would be very convenient. Plus, it looks stupid having to put the key in and standing there for 30 seconds as everything closes up.

Nope, it shouldn't require programming. Check the sticker on your driver's door jamb - if your car was built before April, it doesn't have it.

There you go - you don't have that feature, since your car was built before April 2004.

Thanks for this forum people.

Just today, I went out this morning to leave for work and my top was down. Very strange since, I have one key for my car, it was with me, and I havent let the top down for over a month. Im going to check to see if the remote thing works on my car. Perhaps I pushed the lock/unlock too many times and didnt realize this happened.

I had a friend bring me 2 of them (Reinhold Remote Roof Module ) from the UK last year. Works like a charm ( even on pre 04/04 build cars ) My friend has an 03 and the module works fine on it.

The range on my remote is the worst I have ever seen. My first remote (1991) had more range.

By any chance does anyone have the installation instructions for the E85 Remote Roof Module? I just replaces a 2003 Z4 with a 2008 Z4 and need the instructions to switch the Module to the new car.

Thanks!

I know this post is old, but here is a trick that sounds a bit like an urban myth. But it works.
If you want to extend the distance of your remote, hold the remote up to the bottom of your chin and press the button. The distance increase varies with remote type, car type and battery. But I get another 25 ft or so doing this on my Mustang. For me that's the difference between staying dry on the porch or getting wet. I live in Seattle so we get wet often.
As to why it works, I think your body is actually acting like an antenna. I have no idea why the chin works so well.

Smile 2004 z4 top remote closing?

Hello all I have a 2004 z4 with a production date of 09/04 The key will lower the windows and top remotely however I cant get it to raise the top. Am I doing something wrong or was it just not an option. If I put the key in the door and hold it in the lock position it will then raise the roof and windows?? The owners manual says it will work this way by remote but not for me. Anyone got some Ideas.

George
