Cost of tranny rebuild, '86 528E?

Hi,

I am considering buying an 1986 528E with a bad tranny, anybody have an idea of what rebuilding the transmission should cost? Or maybe you had this done and remember what it cost you? I am looking for a ball park figure of what to expect. The 80's 5-series are awesome! Thanks.

That is a great commuter car! It could be a pricey endeavor going past the 1K mark so many people just opt for known good used unit, but a rebuilt one will give you peace of mind. For a car with a bad tranny they should be paying you to take it away unless it is in absolutely great shape and even then it shouldn't be much.

Had mine rebuilt about 4yrs ago with 12months/12,000 mi. warranty ......ball park figure at $3000. Trans still working without problems.......however I'm dealing with an un-related electrical problem that is due to an 'after-market' install of a stereo system (previous owner had installed).
