My '97 528i with stuff and pictures.

I finally finished my car. Its a '97 528i that i picked up about 3 months ago or so. I wanted to keep the car as a comfortable car and just a tad more grunt. I wasnt going to make this car a super fast car, to do that i think i've picked the wrong base car.

So the list are:
- Fully repainted PlatinGrau (OEM 2008 5/7series color)
- AC Schnitzer 4 piece kit (didnt like the trunk lip and roof spoiler)
- AC Schnitzer type II 3pc 19X8.5/9,5
- Falken 452 245/35 + 265/30
- AC Schnitzer springs + Bilstein Sport Shock
- Fujitsubo header (removed the cat)
- Racing Dynamic muffler
- Alutec strut tower bar
- M5 trunk lip spoiler
- M5 mirrors (including mirror module and working fold feature)
- Chrome euro trunk list
- HELLA euro headlight with HID and celis rear
- Taiwan made Park Distance Control (it works great and comes with display, when the light turns red, then you only have about 30 cm to the object)
- AC Schnitzer pedals (dead, brake and gas pedals) - authentic

Future plans are 325 intake manifold and audio upgrade (nothing fancy just replace the speakers and add a sub).

Any inputs, comments or criticism are welcome.

best regards,

-teddy

sorry, but i bought them at a local shop here. The header was meant for a 3 series as you can see on this pic that the downpipe is 2-1 whereas our car is 2-2. I had to cut the downpipe and keep it 2-2. Here's a pic of the header

Fujitsubo is a Jap company that makes excellent exhaust system for a lot of aftermarket application. http://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/

actually the throttle response is much much noticeable. The car pulls really hard on the high RPMs. So yeah, you do feel the difference. When i have my OEM header off, you can see that the OEM header has lots of rough angles and honestly, i thought they were put together poorly. The openings on the headers are also very small.

The Fujitsubo (i am sure also other aftermarket headers) have much smoother bends and they are mandrel bent, so that the air flows much smoothly.

As far as noise, yes it is noticeably more grunt.

Mine was 'New Old Stock' so they run me pretty cheap around US$280, i heard that they are around $500 brand new nowdays. I have the all black one, a friend has a red one (i just thought the red color is a bit much). Actually i have 3 friends here with E39 and all 4 of us has Fujitsubo headers. 2 other friends in E36 also has the same headers. Yupe the shop has 6 of them left, and we took all of them.

Looks awesome! I have a 97 528i also. Feel free to hit me up on aim=iimprezu.

question though, what benefit do you get by putting the 325i intake manifold? sounds interesting.

thats awesome to hear.. ive been researching headers for our cars.. n to mention price tags of in the 1000s im like no way am i paying that much regardless of how much i would love to have them haha having added a remus muffler a few weeks back.. im starting to love the noise out of my car n wouldn't mind a bit more.. along with the extra throttle response

just to make it clear.. did u purchase the E36 headers, n cut off n used different piping all together for the 2-2 or u molded it to fit?

Great work man. I'm not sure about the S5 emblem but I am REALLY REALLY REALLY feeling that paint color. I mean WOW!! You sunk some serious $$ into this bad boy and it shows. Very nice! 2x

p.s. got any info on that strut tower bar? I've been looking forever and haven't seen a decent one for a decent price$.

Also, we've seen some reports of e39's running like crap after removing the cats. I take it you didn't have any problems there?

The M50 intake manifold is actually a bigger intake than the M52 on our 528i. If im not mistaken the manifold in our car is reduced in size to strict the power output in Germany. By doing this the car would be in a much cheaper insurance group.

Increasing the size of the manifold would also increase the power gain. Not much, but the power delivery is much more linear throughout the powerband. Also recommended to swap out the throttle body as well.

i wish i have taken some under the car pictures to show you better, but yes that is correct.

You see, our car is a bit funny. From the header there are 2 pipes then they both go to cat, out still 2 pipes, then they become 1 before they go into the Y resonator and becomes 1 all the way to the muffler.

I delete my cat as well, so i cut the ends on my fujitsubo where it is still 2 pipes then add pipes to right before they become 1 pipe on the Y resonator.

Dont like the S5 badge? it comes with the bodykit...oh well. This is my personal opinion, The strut tower bar is all show actually, well E39s at least. We wouldnt feel any difference since i dont track my car or drive it hard enough to notice it. Its a different story in my old E30 M3 where i do need all the strengthening where-ever i can find.

Alutec is actually a Taiwanese company that makes strutbars. They are made out of aluminum/carbon fibre. I tried to steer away from CF bars. I had a CF upper rear bar in my old GTI and it broke on me while autocross. The part where the CF meets the metal is a very week point and doesnt hold stress very well, so i tried to avoid that.
http://www.motorexonline.com/strutbars.html
The fit and finish is excellent. i like how the base goes around the top of my shock tower. The welds are also excellent. Since there's a local Alutec representative the bar is pretty cheap at around US$150

No i dont have any problems with removing the cat. Im glad there isnt O2 sensor in my car. I believe the later model E39 has it.

Ahh ok that makes sense then. Awesome man.

OH and I guess I really showed my ignorance on the S5 badge. If it came with your body kit then it's obviously legit and holds more credence. I assume it's a Schnitzer emblem signifying the model and body kit upgrade? If that's the case then very cool. Seriously, all around you've put some blood, sweat and money into your car and it shows. I'd love to see and hear it in person. Very nice man and truly impressive.

i know this is kinda late but, apart from doing the M50 Manifold Mod, you can also add E36 M3 Cams (S52) on the M52 to boost a +20HP, but you will need softwear or a Tune to run the new setup properly to take full advantage of it.

definitely like the mods. pictures look pro... the only thing i would change are the rims but then again if i like them you might not like them and vice - versa. but everything else is solid. congrats
