Smile Z4MC Track Toy

Here is a little video of my Z4MC on the ring a couple weeks ago. I'm still working on the suspension set-up as the one in this video is NOT ideal just yet. It's still MUCH better than stock, but with some better spring rates, I think this will easily be a sub 8:00 BTG car.

I would estimate just under 50 actual laps. This was by no means a clean lap, but I thought you guys might enjoy the Subaru on fire at Wipperman.

Great Video...and to think I could have possibly been your co-pilot on that run or better yet trying to keep up with you. Oh well, this Fall will have to do and I am looking forward to it.

I know timing devices aren't allowed, so it would make sense that cameras aren't allowed either. Trying to cut down on people acting crazy.

Wow.... Great vid. I WILL drive that track one day.

When did they repave that section (coming out of Flugplatz)?

Like most, the only "experience" I have on the 'Ring is via Gran Turismo 4, but it's good to know that my lines and gear selection with an M3 CSL (wish they had a Z4MC) are similar to what you're doing in real life.

Nice video and nice driving! One thing that neither video nor Gran Turismo can accurately portray is the elevation changes there.

DSC on or off?

Would love to see video that includes your hands. A mount on the top of the center console with the right field of view may be in order...

-In-car cameras and recorders are banned. It's on the 'Ring website. Has to do with...what else: liability. Thanks very much Russ for giving us a peek

The car is back together with some key changes and proving to be faster than ever. God I love this car!

Awesome video! I need to hit the ring on my next trip to Germany - hopefully in the fall.

What is your camera set up? Camera and mount type?

When you say "some key changes" what do you mean - if you don't mind sharing Car seems very fast as does your driving.

Thanks for sharing!

Nice video. How are the KW Clubsports working out?

Me and a couple of friends are thinking about a trip to Germany for the Ring in one of the cars from Rent-A-Racecar. Their rates seem quite reasonable- I was considering an E46 M3 as that would be close to a Z4MC in terms of the experience.

Thanks! I'm not running the Clubsports, but rather the Competition KW with racing top mounts. The advantage of the Competition setup is more durability and availability to run a variety of springs. The setup is so far superior to the TC Kline I used in the past it frustrates me I even tried them. Nobody has more experience with winning suspensions on the Nordschleife than KW. Their suspensions are in all the top tier cars for the past five years including the top BMW for the past two years--a Z4M!

Rent-a-Racecar is a good company. You should also consider RSRnurburg.com They also offer training which is vital for learning this place in a safe and limited amount of time you may have on a vacation. RSRNurburg also offers extra insurance if you go off and do any significant damage.

-Can you elaborate on what it is about the KWs that you find superior to the TCKs?

Sure.

First, fitment: The TCK topmounts used a narrow mount which were quite thick as well. This forced the damper to be used without a tender spring if you wanted to get the car low enough. The narrow mounts also place non-uniform load to the strut towers. Mine were deformed after a couple trips around the ring and need to be carefully re-formed.

The KW fits perfectly inside the strut tower and doesn't require modified bolts to mount a strut brace. Load is more uniformly distributed.

Second, size: As previously mentioned, TCK dampers are long and extension is significant forcing the use of softer spring rates with greater length, otherwise the springs become loose on the perches and flop around when the car goes airborne and making a hell of a noise when they don't rest back on the perches properly.

KW uses a damper length and spring package custom designed for the dimensions of the car. I can run a 140 kg spring up front with a helper and at full extension there isn't and separation. Fitment is perfect. As for the rear spring, the perch is also the height adjuster and adjustment can be made without tools. A great design.

Third, damping ability: If I wanted to change bump or rebound, there was almost no noticeable effect from one adjustment to the next. I usually needed more than two clicks to notice any change. As soon as I went with a stiffer spring package in the TCK, the dampers quickly became oversprung and worthless.

KW adjustments are immediately noticeable. KW tells me going to different spring packages won't require re-valving the dampers except for extreme circumstances where vehicle weight changes combined with spring changes alter the damping ability.

When I ordered my suspension, I told them the vehicle weight, desired wheel to fender height, and application use (street legal dedicated track). They provided me exactly what I wanted with recommended starting point settings for the dampers. I did 15 laps this day and I only changed rebound one click on each corner and bump 1 click. The rear stab was tightened and camber up front was increased 1/2 degree. It's now a sub 8 minute ring car and I would never have gotten there with TCK.

Not to bash TCK too bad... Pete gave me awesome customer service and did his very best to help me get my car set-up. The problem is nobody in the US who has never driven the circuit here can fully understand what forces the car must withstand. Watching the video really doesn't describe the place. I have nothing against TCK, but there is much better stuff out there now.

We just talked about it yesterday and were going to loop you in this weekend You will be the local guide.

Ideally, we should plan to have RussRamz (if he does not mind) there so we can follow him around for a couple of laps to get an idea of the line.

I would be more than happy to right seat anyone who would be interested. What time frame are you all planning on coming?

Thanks! I am using a Sony HDR-CX100 with a Hamma suction cup glass mount.

Thanks for the compliment. You must also understand a stock Z4M won't be able to turn a fast lap like this. I'm running nearly upgraded everything except for the engine. The only engine upgrades are software and headers.
