Audi R8 or BMW m6?

asking this question for my brother, he and his business partner are splitting the cost of a high speed sports car... he asked me for my 2 cents, and i said go with the m6 just because i have a passion for that car..

but which is actually better? they are similar in price, and engine specs...

Audi R8 Starting at $109,000*
The mid-mounted V8 engine with 4.2 liter displacement and four-valve FSIŽ technology produces 420 hp and accelerates the Audi R8 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. The maximum torque of 317 lb-ft delivers breathtaking thrust. The top speed is 187 mph. But ultimately these numbers merely prepare the ground for something that is impossible to express in numbers: the supreme driving experience.

BMW M6 $100,300 MSRP
5.0-liter, V-10 engine, 500 hp
High performance from high-speed engines: that's the philosophy of BMW M. This compact, high-revving, V-10 power unit develops enormous thrust and muscle that's always on tap. At 5.0 liters of displacement and 500 horsepower, the V-10 produces 100 horsepower per liter - a remarkable feat for a naturally aspirated production engine. And its power-to-weight ratio of one horsepower per each eight pounds is a figure more representative of a racecar than one you'd have in your driveway.

made the same post on audizine.com, they all said r8.. wondering what you guys will say

R8 looks like a chic car and lacks testosterone, it looks pretty but not intimidating and the M6 is simply all muscle......would not be too pleased if I owned a R8 and then seeing a chic driving one

the audi r8's rtronic is much better than bmw's smg. R8is a very easy daily driver and a forgiving car. It also feels like it has more torque from the botttom. It all depends on what I am feeling like driving for the day. Both are great cars, but remember that the R8 is in more of a demand now, so you will not be able to find one at msrp or even get onto a list for 1-2 yrs. The M6 having been out for 2 yrs now are suffering from unreasonable depreciation - can pick up a used one in the high 60s. The spread between a used M6 and a used R8 can easily be $80k right now. Go take both out for a test drive and make that decision.

M6, although the R8 has the "wow" factor at the moment, IF you can buy one for a reasonable price.

Uh....R8. No contest. Can you even get an M6 in a six speed? Let alone one with a sexy gated shifter like the R8?

Have you seen the R8 in real life? It is no where close to being a chic car, if anything.. the M6 is more a chic car than the R8. The R8 is so aggressive looking.. its almost equivelant to ferraris, and other exotic cars in how it looks. The stance in low and the body is wide.

Also the fact that you see M6's every day and a R8 is much more rare.. I would pick the Audi.

M6 all the way! Better resale and after all, Audi has its' quirks. More than BMW. Of course, I am biased owning an ///M6 cab! Where I live, there aren't alot of M6's, probably 5. I haven't seen the R8 at all, but the local Audi dealer is not the best. For me, owining an M6 gives me the power that I want and also blends in. It doesn't stick out like a 911 GT3, turbo or R8. I like being sublime...but it's the best car I've ever owned!

I have seen only 2 R8s so far and this place has all kinds of cars... lambos, bentley, Rolls, ferraris, lotus, ford GT, you name it and you will see it..

Give me the key fob to a Saphire Black/Portland 6speed M6 and you can keep your V8 Audi.

As an owner of multiple BMW's I love the way they drive and I am quite bias towards them. But on this one I would have to say that Audi R8 is the car with more superior driving dynamics with its mid-rear lay out. Also, it looks awesome.

However, if you need back seats then go with M6

Couldn't have said it better. I work in Silicon Valley where as you can imagine there are no shortage of millionaries around here. I see M's in all flavors generally on a daily basis. However, I've only seen one R8 as they rolled into the Yahoo! parking lot next to my work. There is absolutly no way that is a chick's car, my dick grew 2" just being in its presence.

djmugga,

the audi r8, is the MOST hyped, MOST publicated vehicle EVER, that doesnt really have much to talk about. It is an Audi, which means, it IS a VW. It has 420 hp, only? Our new 7 series coming in spring, has 407! and thats for a full weight sedan.

Bmw M6 on the other hand, 500 hp of pure power. Pure exhilaration. And after all, it is BMW, Not VW. And like some of my fellow posters have stated before I, the R8 is a vehicle i would buy my super model wife, but not before even a CL!

And to top things off, Audi dealers have the guts, to sell the vehicle, this underpowered, hyped, POS, for a 50k PREMIUM!

Audi should try to compete with its tier, trying to compete with MB and BMW and Bentley, is just going to hurt Audi.

All in all, M6>>>>>>> VW R8

kzang,

m6 has been in life for 3-4 years, R8 was launched this year, hence the desparity in number of cars you see. I will go out on a limb(exageration) and say you will see a bunch of R8s within the next 6 months. R8 is the freshman girl who has the crush on the M6 senior stud!

The Audi R8 is definitely a piece of automotive art and one of the most hyped automobiles prior to the release of the Nissan (Skyline) GTR, which not only looks the part but lives up to the hype.

If it was my decision between the R8 and the M6 it would come down to how the car drives, not straight line performance and engine horsepower and torque numbers. Drive both and then decide, though I doubt you can find an R8 to test drive anywhere at this point.

A friend of mine was faced with this same decision, and ended up getting the car that he could get away with parking next to the CEO's 760Li: The M6. Doesn't sound like your brother will have this problem, but I'd honestly have a difficult decision to make. I'd want the three pedal version, and that might put the R8 over the top. If you're shopping the DSG versions, it's just too close to call for me. I'd want to drive them first.

its an easy decision.....

if you want to flashy and stand out in the crowd......get the R8

if you want to be flashy + stand out in the crowd + an amazing driving experience...get the M6

there you have it folks......and this is my opinion after test driving the R8....and the M6....

M6 will make everyday a special day....

Kzhang....you went a little overboard with that comment buddy....I live in Greenwich and my neighbour has a Ferrari and a bentley GTC and so does some others in the area where I live in and they never take those cars to NYC, that would be the craziest thing to do...that being said, I work in midtown manhattan and so far I have just seen pretty girls , not pretty cars.....

and if you are talking about Queens , Brooklyn & Staten Island....they are full of busted cars....I would say M3s, yeah some of those old models hanging out over there...no M5 or M6.....you are lucky if you see some 645s....let alone a 650...

^^^^ +1

when people hear the words "New York City" , they get excited.

While new york does have an abundant amount of rich people, it has even MORE poor people. Not everyone in NYC drives a 100k vehicle, because it is just that, a 100k vehicle. Get a clue people!

There is more to cars then just straight line acceleration. That same E63 AMG cant keep up with the R8 on a track where handling, acceleration, and braking as well as overall driving dynamics count.

R8>E63 AMG on a track
