98 740i - Raw gas smell

I have a low milage 1998 740i with a persistant problem. Periodically I detect a strong raw gas odor. Both my local dealer and a independent BMW mechanic have attempted to diagnose the problem without success. Any thoughts on how I might track down the source of the problem?

Is the smell more obvious from inside or outside the vehicle?

The smell is outside and seems to be more tword the right rear.

I used BMW Seattle but have been using Presision Motors lately. Both have been unable to find it.

I am waiting for the delivery of a new 535xiT and want to sell the 740, but would like to find the leak first.

I'll try your suggestions this weekend and see what I can uncover. Thanks for the tip.

You might take a look at these before you head into the garage...

Fuel filler hose repair

Fuel pump check

Fuel filter

I just saw your posts from before the ED trip. We used BMW Seattle and we were very happy! What a great experience! (Oct 2002)

Thanks,
It is very internitent and doesn't seem to be associated with hard acceleration or a full tank. After my last trip to the garage I agreed to take it in when the smell was obvious and I did so. They were not able to detect anything using a "sniffer" (probablly their pet Chihuahua) and removal of the back seat. Sort of like going to the doctor.
The smell is very strong and from outside the car.

I have the very same issue!!

I have the same problem! I only get the STRONG gas smell when the tank is low on gas (which is more often now-a-days)

I have the Same Year and Model as you...

It's a mystery to me!

Could it be leaking from the fuel filter connections?
