Tranny died with 132K on the ticker. I did a tune up and rebuilt the vanos assembly. Apparently the increase in power killed what was left of the transmission.

I'm at 80k miles on my 325i it seems to be running better than ever. I just swapped out the tranny fluid at 70k miles for the first time and used Mobil 1 Dexron VI and I think it was definitely a good choice because its been 10k miles now and no problems. I'm gong to continue to change the tranny fluid every 30k miles going forward and hope to make it past 150k (when I'll probably sell the car).

I got a the dreaded gear and my DSC light came on yesterday. Symptoms include abrupt jerky shifts into D and seemingly no first gear.

So in conclusion, from this poll, about 20% of E46 owners have needed a transmission replacement.

Got 193K on mine, with original transmission. Regular fluid changes, etc but nothing out of the ordinary.

Smile 2001 330xi Automatic Tranny

bought car used at 74k nothing wrong with it, now it has 97K on it. I only changed the ATF fluid and gear oil at 90k with Red Line and it still drives like brand new. So much fun to drive, it is still tight no prob what so ever. my mechanic tells me it will easily get 1/4 m miles on it no problem their just stong cars.

Unhappy Transmission control box and transmission replaced

My Z3 just turned 60,000. The warning indicator light came on several times and we went thru the ritual and everything was OK for awhile. Then, it didn't correct the problem. Had my car towed in and the repair person replaced the control box. When the new one arrived, it blew out and we knew the transmission was kaput...... I replaced the transmission because I love my car and thought it was the wise thing to do. Very sad in Chapel Hill.

I currently have 116k miles on my engine and transmission. I have never had any problems with the transmission at all, because I've changed all the fluids in the rear differential, transmission, and transmission filter every year.

I'm just shy of 125k and not a problem. My mechanic says he can see where the trans cooler has leaked at one point, but there is no evidence of a current issue, and not enough was lost to even detect when checking it. I've never seen a drop in my garage. It must be considered though, that it has been taken care of meticilously its whole life.

Are there any signs to tip me off that my transmission is failing or will I go to leave for work one day and find that my car has turned into a real expensive paperweight.

I just started thinking about that lifetime tranny oil the last couple of days. Mine is 03 - 65K now with no problem but never changed the tranny oil. May be I should drain and refill or something. I do not like this car any more. I will sell as soon as possible and go back to Honda or Toyota.

It really depends on driving style. We have had some coming in the w'shop at a mere 30K and I have a customer with 165K on the clock and it's still beating like it's new. It mostly depends on whether they are towing something with the car or are they constantly in S mode making manual shifts causing the oil to overheat. But normally a heavily used gearbox shall undergo an oil and filter change at about 80K.

I'm at 106k and no problems so far (knocking on wood). Reading this thread is making me nervous, since I have not changed my transmission fluid or replaced anything related to the tranny......

86K car here. GM tranny, changed the oil myself at 85K. Put in Texaco 8072B (the original fill). No problems so far. Old oil was not bad at all. I do not know about lifetime but I believe one can get 125K out of the original oil easily. However changing the filter is always a good thing. If everything is done right it should be only for the better. The write-up in my signature.

I don't think the tranny is goin on my 03 330xi, but when I start mine after it's been sitting in the sun or hot weather it shifts fine into D but seems to stay in neutral and the engine just revs for a couple seconds until it shifts into first and goes fine.. 82000 on the odometer

I don't think there is. BMW manual trannys are pretty bullet proof.
