Auxiliary fan headache

Problem: My 2001 740il's auxiliary fan does not come on ever. The manual says it should come on for briefly at 20% of its maximum speed then switches off amongst other times. I have never seen it come on at any given point or time. I have checked all of the fuses and all are intact. I have power coming to the plug that connects to the fan itself. So I order a new BMW auxiliary fan ($380.00) and plug it in from the outside of the vehicle. Still nothing. Any suggestions? I just find it weird that I have power up to the fan but it does not work.

When you turn on the AC and the aux fan should always power up, even if just for less than a minute.

Could it be this? Aux fan resistor repair.

Blown Fuse and the low speed resistor are the usual culprits for no low speed on the aux fan.

At least this is true on the older versions. Feed 12 volts to it directly and it should run if the fan is ok.

My fan for my model year has no resistors on the fan. It also states in the Bentley manual "when the A/C is switched ON, the electric fan is not immediately turned on". Thanks for the responses. Keep them coming as I am open to suggestions.

relays

Also in the manual, it has 3 relays..... one engine cooling fan relay, stage 3 (k201) ....one high speed relay (k22)....and one normal speed relay (k21) could one of these be bad not letting the fan to even start?

I see that in the Bentley, but my 00 aux fan always comes on, even if briefly, when I hit the A/C button.

Did you see anything about a temperature switch (part #9) on the water pump?

No, I didn't see anything that would lead me to suspect a link between the two. The only fault code I am getting is the 8D "engine cooling fan control".

power to aux fan

I checked again and I do have 12volts going to my large wire (with the key off) and around 13/14 volts 3.67 volts When the motor is started to the small wire using the brown as the ground. Any suggestions?

Hello, Eldin here from Chicago. I have a similar problem with my 00 740i. I connected the fan directly to the battery and got slight movement and then smoke. Either it was working and I burned it or it didn't work to begin with. Needless to say, I replaced it along with the coolant sensor and still no movement. The only thing I am not sure of is the location of the corresponding fuse. I found a fuse box under the hood but all fuses check normal. Do you know where the fuse to the auxiliary fan is located?

aux fan

I had the same problem a month ago we went through everything even the new fan, it turned that my DME was corroded which is very unusual for that car but it happens so new DME ( costly ) but that was it and now it works perfect. Hopefully it's something else because a new DME is expensive but there is a place in Canada that is very well reviewed and 1/2 the cost ( RPM is the name and you can google their info )
