M roadster locking gas cap?

An M roadster I'm looking at has (what I think is) a BMW brand locking gas cap. Did they come with these standard? I've seen pictures to the contrary (a regular gas cap with a plastic retaining line). The car is a 1998 model.

Thanks for any insight!

Thanks Ron! Just what I was looking for. Strange, the one on the car I looked at had a key. The description for the one you're talking about seems to be a coded setup (i.e. keypad).

Does anyone know what they did after 9/98? Do they have a locking fuel door like the other E36's now?

Thanks again to everyone on this website (especially Ron). The threads are always great and informative. A great place to hang out.

Key code like car key, not a keypad.

Our January 99 built M Rdstr has a locking gas cap. It uses the same key as the doors, trunk and ignition. I have never locked it since getting the car.

The 01 has a pin that catches the door to secure it, though I'm sure it could be defeated if someone made half an effort.
