Technically 6.8, but I throw in the full 7. It places the level a tad over the full mark, and when I change the oil after 8K miles it's right on the full mark.

You can mix similar weight oils wihout issue. However best use one that is BMW-LL1 approved (it will be printed on the back of the bottle if it is)

Most common ones are:
BMW 5-30 Synthetic (a custom formuallion from Castrol)
Castrol European Syntec 0-30 (made in Germany, NOT USA)
Mobil1 0-40.

You have the M52TU engine which should be the same as the M54 engines, 6.5 liters, or 6.9 quarts.

I don't know why you want to mix oils.

You only put the oil in the engine, the filter canister will fill up once engine is started. Aslo know that you need to replace the oil filter (or at least open the canister) BEFORE you put the pan drain plug back in. Reason is once you break the seal on the filter canister, about a quart of old oil will dump back into the pan.

thanks

thank you, i was smart enough to realize that the oil from the canister would dump back into the pan and had already removed the filter. however i didnt know that the oil in the canister would refill automaticly. thank you for all of your help.
