what's the mileage?
you should also look for service records especially timing belt and water pump. That's a little high on the price.

He is right. It is a 25 year old car! Unless it is in pristine condition, it probably is not worth all that money. You can actually put historic plates on that one already! For that price you can get a much newer bimmer or better yet, a nice 535is! Make sure you look in the NJ side of Craiglists and be prepared to drive for an excellent deal.
Good Luck!

I paid $700 for my 528e
It was a owned by one family - no rust, 111K miles. Everything works - drives and rides nice. I tossed the bottlecaps and 14" tires for used Borberts for $150 from a fellow BMW club member and now I have a decent E28 Right time right place - that's my motto when looking for cars. $3500 should put you in very very nice 535is territory not 528e.

I paid $1,000 for my '88 535 is. I'm no Bimmer expert (yet), but this sounds exhorbitant to me.

too expensive
I would'nt pay that much. I paid $500 four years ago, replaced water pump and timing belt. Two days ago the left drider's strut housing rusted through. I would'nt buy it for that
