Exclamation z3 2000 transmission warning light

Trans warning light came on when I was backing out of my driveway which is on hill. I drove awhile and stopped then restarted the engine and the light went away. What is this all about. It happened twice in the lasr week. Any advice?

From your DIY post: if it's the light that has a broken circle around it, it's just a brake pad sensor. Check your pads for wear as either the front or rear need to be changed. The sensors are located on the left front pad and right pad.

brake wear sensor warning light.

Does it look like this but with teo dashed lines around the outside instead of two solid lines?\

Better yet, just take a pic of the light.

Since the car didn't come with an owners manual, I couldn't figure it out. I was able to download a manual this morning and it says it is the transmission warning light. The tranmission was shifting ok. It said if this light comes on the tranny woulg go into 3rd gear only. This didn't happen.

My transmission light comes on from time to time. It tends to happen more when it is raining, so I suspect a short. No behavior changes, it still works fine.

I wouldn't expect too many responses on this as there aren't very many of us Automatic owners on here.

I have same warning light

.For the last 6 months, the transmission light comes on periodically...sometimes months will go by, sometimes 2-3 times in a week..the owners manual says, pull over, turn off engine, set parking brakem wait a miniute and restart...that works, almost as if they were aware of the impending problem..anyway, according to our local dealer, as long as that the car(ours is a 2000 Z3 2.8 Coupe) runs OK not to worry, just an erratic sensor issue, though I cannot figure what the parking brake has to do with it

I have a 2000 2.8 auto and it does the same thing the code said brake light sensor, but I swear that it comes on in a tight turn with out hitting the brake so I'm going to have the transmission fluid changed and replace the brake light. I got a 135K on the clock so it's time to dump the life-time fluid.

Transmission light

The same thing happened to me.

It was a faulty low brake pressure switch that lights the (gear / exclamation). $275 to diagnose and install.

Yeah it's the brake pedal switch, it's a $35.00 part that you can DIY.

Mine still does it from time to time because I've been too lazy to replace it.

transmission light on and off

I have the same issue with the transmission light coming on. I do one of two things. Pull over, shut engine off, set emergency brake. This generally takes care of it. I also have the little reset tool to plug in under the hood. That also works. I'm confussed about the break wear sensor response from one of your readers. Were is this located and how easy a fix is it. Why are these two sesors tied together. When the transmission light is on, the cruise control does not work?

I think there are two issues being discussed here. The auto transmission light usually is accompanied with no display of what gear you are in when you are in manual mode. This usually is related to the transmission control module.

The brake warning light is different & is usually related to the solenoid being talked about.

transmission light

I am not a tech. Call Steve Thomas BMW (805) 482-8878, ask for service and what they did to the 2000 z3 with the vin ending in G02317 about 1 year ago.

I was told a brake sensor problem fired my transmission light. The following sensors are usually part of the transmission: MPLS (Manual Linkage Position Sensor), input and output speed sensors, shift solenoids, and governor sensor.

Please be aware that some sensors are not part of the transmission itself, but in other areas of the vehicle. These include the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), the MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor), MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor), PCM (Power Control Module or Computer), DSS (Differential Speed Sensor), CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor), IAT (Intake Air Temperature) and because they are interelated can give false readings.
