Squirrels have been sneaking under your hood at night and storing corn from your neighbors' bird feeders on your exhaust manifold in preparation for a long winter?

I can't think of anything that smells like burnt popcorn, but a smell after hard acceleration is usually the clutch, in my experience.

Have you looked under the hood? The power steering reservoir, which uses ATF fluid, has a breather hole in it that leaks fluid all over the place during aggressive cornering maneuvers. I cover mine with a tube sock to soak it up.

Good point. It could also be a valve cover gasket (or other) oil leak. As you rev it hard the pressure picks up and can leak out onto hot parts. I have the same problem, my valve cover is leaking all over the place!

I'd do a pretty thorough hose inspection. I had the same problem after pushing mine, and it turned out to be leaking power steering hoses. Replaced the failing factory clamps with the screw-tight kind, and now she's

Theres been no leaks (unless its collecting somewhere at the bottom of the engine bay,but i would smell it right?). I drove very modestly and there was no smell at all. So it has to deal with redlining, what could it be?

I only seemed to smell it after maintaining high rpm's on the interstate. My leak was under the reservoir, where the the hoses connected. If you're not finding one anywhere, then I don't know.

I have the same smell problem - e46 325 - 2001

Hi Guys,
Recently I encountered the same problem. I was driving in the mountains and the automatic gear box used to change the speeds from 5 to 3 and the RPM use to go over 4000 sometimes... than the smell use to appear and than disappear after a while when the road got better (no more up and down); also, if I drive a bit more sporty same thing happens - bad smell, like hot engine, even though the temperature in dashboard was normal. Did you find out where is it coming from? I do not see any leaks. What can it be?
Thanks!
