M Sport Steering Wheel vs stock M-Technic

About to do ED on a '03 540i 6spd (w/ NAV, DSP, PDC) less than 1 week (leaving on the 23rd, pickup and factory tour on the 26th)

I've drawn up a wish list of parts that I may pick up while in Munich. A number of folks have mentioned that the installation of the M Sport Steering Wheel can be done for approx 22 Euros while there.

It seems like a good deal, and I think that I like the look of the M Sport Wheel, but now I'm wondering if I'm just getting carried away

Looking online, it seems that a lot of the folks opting for the M Sport Steering Wheel have done so because they had the Multifunction Steering Wheel.

Have folks been replacing the M-Technic steering wheel with the M Sport Steering Wheel as well?

What are the benefits/drawbacks of the new wheel vs the old one? What do people think of the M-Technic wheel?

Do the M-Technic and the M Sport wheels have all the same buttons? Are they the same size?

If I replace the steering wheel while I'm in Munich, what happens to the "old" steering wheel?

Sigh.. less than one week to wait, but it's definitely driving me CraZy

pics?

btw, does anyone have good pics of the 2 steering wheels (installed)? It was hard to find a good pic of the M Sport Steering Wheel fully assembled when i was looking online. I wanted to compare side-by-side to see if the buttons were the same, layouts, etc.

I thought the newer Sport E39's came with the nicer, smaller M-Sport wheel? Take a look on my DIY write up for some pics. If you are already getting the wheel KrispyKreme has on his link, I think that's the nicest one you can get, and it might already be on there OEM. You should check w/ someone.

not sure which wheels you're referring to, but my wife's 02 525iT has the smaller 3 spoke sport wheel, nice thick grip etc. This is what comes on U.S. spec sport package e39's. which are you referring to? And at 22 euros! you should buy a crate of them and sell them here... I paid around 1k to upgrade the stock 4 spoke wheel in my 98 528 with a sport wheel...

Yeah, for some reason, I think the 22 Euros is for the install or something else because even on Germany eBay, they go for over $300 USD just for the older M-Sport wheel.

540/6 will already have M sport steering wheel

Not sure which one you want to replace it with. All 03 5er with sport package will have the M sport steering wheel (the same wheel that's in M5 minus the red/blue stitching)

Here's the picture from my 03 530i with sport package:

Yup, that's the cool wheel that should probably come w/ it. I'm jealous!

That's the one I upgraded to, but the center section is a bit bloated compared to the newer sport wheel, but that's just IMHO. I also wish I could get the thicker, slightly newer M-Sport wheel in either type, but my '97 won't fit it.

I had the newer M wheel in my 2001 320dT, but I really do prefer the "older" wheel (pic that I attached above). My buddy has it in his E38 and it seems just as FAT ... That wheel seems right IMHO for the E39/E38. No 3er drivers at least have that wheel.

Just my 0.02 EUR worth, i.e, free advice in USD!

I like the grip/feel of the M sport wheel on my 540ia, one thing I would've really like to have is an On/Off button for the radio. Although a nice feature is the tilt/telescopic adjustments.

I'm curious about your warning label. I peeled mine off after a few days, just couldn't convince myself it belonged there. I hope I didn't do something wrong, you know like "Do not remove this tag under penalty of law".

Yup, I removed my warning sticker when I got the car here. The photo I posted above was taken when I dropped off the car in Frankfurt (I did Euro delivery). I didn't bother to remove it then because I figured the VPC would probably put a new one on.
