Infinity Basslink

For anyone who owns the Basslink, two quick questions.
1. Best place to put it in the trunk? I would like to put it over the battery in that little cutout, but where does it get the best sound?
2. Do you need the sub-level control knob? Or can you just set everything up on the sub to comfortable levels and leave it be

I installed the Basslink last year in my 530. It is located mostly in the "battery" cover. My car has folding seats, and I didn't want to bolt it to the floor and not be able to use most of the trunk.

As for the "position for the best sound" it doesn't matter, subs are not directional like a regular speaker AND the BMW is so well insulated a lot of bass does not "get out of the trunk"

I didn't bother with the remote, as I can still control the bass from the factory deck.

i have a w1v2 400 watts rms in my trun and I cant hear a thing...im working on doing a cut out and getting the sub in the cab area. to me its a waist since you cant hear any of the bass from you sub unless you crank it and then your trunk rattles like crazy.

Like the others said, you can put it about anywhere, but I put mine up in the front, left side to keep it out of the way and give it a corner to fire against. I just set mine the way I wanted it and threw the remote in my drawer of stereo crap. It works fine for me.

Regarding bass being trapped in the trunk: If you look at the underside of the package tray from inside the trunk, you should notice a pair of metal discs held in place by small tabs. If you pop them out and remove the insulation above them, the bass gets a nice straight shot up through the package tray. The insulation is already trimmed as well, so it pulls out very easily. It's like BMW intended them to be easily removed!

M-audio subs

You might consider the M-audio subs...fully integrated into the rear shelf, and even have magnetic catches to hold the ski pass through door open when in use. They are dual voice coil and fully intergrate if you have DSP. About $200 each if you shop around from online BMW dealers. Takes about 3 hours to install though...but can be done if you are reasonably handy, not hard, just time consuming.

Again, not the greatest system, but saves some on trunk space (at least floor space), stays oem, and likely better sounding than the Basslink.

I installed my Basslink in the trunk just behind the left side rear seat vertically. I did not want to screw it into the trunk floor pan so I screwed the mounting legs into 3/4" plywood and used lots of industrial strength Velcro to keep the plywood down on the carpet (if I could figure out how to post a picture of it on this site I would); it has never moved around in 4+ years. No need for the sub-level control knob. I also pushed out the round speaker holes in the rear shelf as suggested by ILVSMOG and I put the rear seat armrest in the lowered position to allow more sound into the cabin.

The Basslink gives excellent tight bass and is a very simple plug and play system. I have the gain at about only 25%; anything higher would shake the car apart.

so those metal cutouts are the key? i'll take a look for them...Do you have to remove the entire rear deck again to get to them? because i just installed new 5-1/4" speakers in the back, so i could do it, what tools do i need to do it from the trunk?

Maybe we all have different trunks or something? lol

I have a Basslink in my E39 and it sounds great. With the settings I have I can feel and hear the diff. and generally I have the bass in the OEM HU at the lowest level (rear passengers always complain about it being too loud otherwise...go figure!). I have mine mounted with heavy duty velcro to the trunk flap that hides the battery. Installation took roughly 45 minutes and that's because my laptop was dead and I had to run in and out of my condo looking at the wiring diagrams.

I also took the metal cutouts in the rear deck...you'll need a flathead and a hammer and they'll pop right out.

You access them from inside the trunk. No need to tear anything apart inside the car. They come out quite easily with a little "persuasion".

I'll check the next time I've got the trunk open.

Don't need it. My Basslink came with everything I needed to hook up to the car.
