What a great and thoughtful post!!!! We have all seen plenty of cool images from this spot, but now we all know exactly where it is!!!

Great map! I wish I had this info when I went!

Had the wife and in-laws with me, so as soon as I found a spot I stopped, as I don't think they were up for me driving around too much in the fields. This was from just after the fork in the road from southbound B17.

Open access to this little parking area, and no in-laws yelling about driving past a red circle with white center sign!

Boy, it looks like they had a hard time squeezing that license plate onto your car!

The little halo around the castle is cool!

Yeah, the E39 rears couldn't accept the normal shaped Zoll plates.

This is a great thread, wish it had been around before my trip in May. As a second thought though, why not build a whole list of favorite photo ops? These pictures are about halfway down the length of Am Plansee where there is a broad gravel area with no trees.

Your pictures and report were exceptional. As a matter of fact, I had printed the whole thing out to take on my ED in May and your desciption and photos were one of the reasons I made sure to hit Plansee, specifically for the photo ops (and drive of course). Unfortunently, I didn't run across any R8's though.

BTW, you were asking about the white and blue poles. I saw several and was wondering also, here's what I found: "It is known as a Maypole (in German it's Maibaum). Traditionally, these were used to honor a town's major families during the spring. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see them honoring the town's major industries (to the point where some towns use the maypole to sell advertising space). The Maypole is always topped with a small pine tree."

Perfect - you got lucky with the short grass and the flowers. The grass was about 2 feet tall when I was there, but they had just mowed a small patch of it so it didn't get in the way of my picture.

Once the horse carriages and bus service stop, you can drive right up to the castle. I got there a bit late after dinner, so all I got is a nice photo of my plate and the castle.

If folks are interested, you can look in my picassa album with GPS tag info of where the pictures were taken.

I drove up without staying at Hotel Schwanstein. I was trying to visit Hotel Schwanstein

I am impressed with all of the interesting pictures here. What a photo spot. I am tempted to comment on the creativity of the people here! What a group.

For instance, I thought this was a great and unique angle. Needs a little fill in flash and then it would really look sharp – something like this:

OK, so I successfully used the Garmin file to put the official phot location in my Nuvi 670, and we drove right to the spot this morning. It was overcast, but we took pictures anyway. Here she is.



She is a 335i Sedan. Jet black with black leather. Sport package and heated seats. My first Bimmer, but definitely not my last.

Great thread, thanks. My wife and I got a good laugh. The day we were there, it was raining, but we are already planning the 5er replacement in 2012. I've saved this link in my planning folder.

Yeah....PDC re-delivery comin up the 30th....It's been one of the longest 7 weeks of my life.

Our photo from October '05. I don't think we had any idea that we were on a private road at the time.

Our castle spot pic. The weather was dreary but we survived. Thanks to the people who gave the coordinates. Put them into the Garmin and viola, we were there.
