Need some help resolving a P0505 code...

hello everyone
I'm new this forum. I got my 2002 BMW 330ci a few months ago.
I got my first code for the thermostat and used this forum so save a bunch of cash by not taking it to the dealer. so thanks to everyone how posted about it

Now i've got a P0505 code. I've gone through alot of message strings looking for answers but could find any like the last time.

here is the story.

I was on the highway and the "engine" light came on. then after a few miles it went off. i got home and read the code (engine light still off) and it said P0505 (Idle control system).

I had no problems with the idle RPM. The next day when i restarted the engine kinda sounded slow turning over. I read on the forum that its coz the car is in "safe mode" coz of the code.

i have two questions.actually three

1)is the thing about "safe mode" true, if not how bad is it that i'm still driving.(i.e. am i screwing up the car in some way everytime i drive)?

2)i'm not having any problems with the car now so should i erase the code and see if it comes on again before taking it to the shop?

3)If someone has had this problem. what need replacing and how much did it run them (in $US)?

Thanks to any and all who reply.

You're not screwing up the car by driving it in limp mode.

P0505 is usually caused by a faulty idle air control valve. #8 here:

$163 for the part @ mileoneparts.com. Doesn't look too bad to replace..

Thanks
Is the car in limp mode with the "engine" light off? Can i verify if it still is with an idle Actron OBD II and/or take it out of the mode till i get the part replaced?

I read on another thread that the guy who had this code had trouble getting his car to idle... i don't seem to have the same issue... is it coming soon?

Not too familiar with LIMP mode... is there anything i shouldn't do in this mode (ie highway etc)?

thanks again

Well, *is* the car still in limp mode? Generally, in the limp mode, it won't go very fast. Sounds like your car is operating normally?

You can clear the code with the ODB2 reader and see if it comes back..

Maybe one of you can help me, my car ran fine with a camshaft position sensor light coming on and off. I pulled up to a store turned it off and it wouldnt start after that, it turns over fine but acts like its not getting gas or spark. I borrowed a code reader from O'Reily and it had the camshaft code and this idle air code. Any help would be greatly apprieciated. -Vince
